Loner or Socialite? - 02-12-2008, 07:36 AM

One of the Westminster commentators last night said that Cardigans tend to be more aloof with strangers and a one person dog, and Pembrokes think they need to meet everyone. I thought that was interesting (but wondered if it is generally true).

It would be fun to do an unofficial poll here. On a scale of 1 to 5, is your dog a "loner", one person dog, or a "socialite", friendly with everyone. (1 = loner, 5 = socialite). Also note Cardie or Pemmie.

So far my Charlie (Pembroke) does think he should meet and greet all living things so I would have to give him a 5.

Tucker is a Pem and he gets a 5 also!

Newman is a Cardigan/Bassett mutt and he would rate more like a 2/3. He still loves attention but is not as aggressively friendly (that's not an oxymoron is it?) with strangers as Tucker is.

Generally true. As I heard one person describe the difference in the breeds; a Pembroke would be a politician, Cardigans would the butler or concierge of a upscale restaurant or hotel. Of course there are exceptions, but as a generalization of breed personality, it fits.

I have from 2's to 5's here and they are all cardigans. I like the butler and politcian description. I've also heard of a high class sports car vs the pick up truck or an arabian horse vs a quarter horse.

A lot of it has to do with breeding and a lot of it has to do with how we socialize and raise the dogs.

Duncan is a pem and rated a 5. Chloe is a corgi/chow and I would rate her as a 1. Duncan can't seem to get enough of people, while Chloe demstrates the chow personality more than a corgi. She is protective of her territory, very aloof unless she wants to be with you, and then, the corgi comes out.

Well i owned both.

Malcolm (Male-cardigan) (he passed away about 3-4 years ago): he was like a 2-3 he was really a watch guard kind of dog. he would have to meet everyone. if they seemed nice he would be nice if they seemed a little "sketchy" he would be more aggressive

To dogs: he didnt really like them he would just egnore(sp?) them...just wallk away. 3

Megan (Female-pembroke): she is a sweety and loves people and LOVES being pet but wont drag you across the road to meat someone. she would when she was younger but now she is older it is almost as if she is to say "ya just another human what else is new" so i would say 4

To dogs: she would get really jelouse but she would try to stay away. she is never really agressive just annouyed by them. 2-3

Abby (female-pembroke): she is a 5.....thousand!. she LOVES people. Just loves them has to meat everyone. now she wont drag me across the road beacause i tought her not to but if i didnt she would

To dogs: it takes a little while to be comftorble around them but once she is she likes them. she has to be the dominant one. 3 at first 5 once she meats them.

Trevor (male-pembroke): 4-5 he is a little more laid back and submissive but he loves people

To dogs: he is a 4-5. he likes them and will play with them but he would rather be around humans

Abby:

Well Chip is definitely the outgoing one of my three so he would get a 5, Dale is very much more reserved until he knows you so he would get a 1 to 2. Taffy loves everybody also but not quite as much as Mr. Personality so she will get a 4.

Debbie - I love the comment on politician, they surely would get my vote.

Nick, a Cardi, is probably a 4 although I think his demeanor is really more of a "product of the environment" type thing. There are not a lot of Cardigans in my neighborhood so he ends up getting a lot attention from people on the street. I can definitely see him as a concierge in an upscale Fifth Avenue Apartment Building!

Tegan(Pem) has expressed her desire to be a goodwill ambassador to all living things! She is a 5. My dalmation ,"Carter", is a snob-I'll give her a 2. My lab/chow,"Kirby",has a little chip on her shoulder--I'll give her a 1. Fun thread--thanks!

Westin (pem!) definitely a 5. Willing to rub his always-shedding self up on anyones pant leg or outstretched arm!
