What would your Corgi do? - 02-14-2008, 05:05 PM

I was talking to my soon-to-be mother-in-law about our dogs over the weekend. She has a 2 year old German Short-haired Pointer.... They live in a in the country and Scout, the pointer, decided she would lead them into the pastures. So after we called them back, we started to talk about pups not finding there way home or ending up at a road...Then we started to talk about microchipping the dogs as well. We were talking about how trusting some animals are to people. This is where I get to my question for everyone and its not about how you train them, but it comes down to your dog's personalities.

Here is a scenario... someone were to drive up and see your dog in your front yard without you (remember, they is all hypothetical b/c I sure wouldn't leave them in the front yard by themselves)....The person gets out of their car and calls them over, they are calling friendly and they don't seem to be a threat....
Would your corgi greet them and hop in their vehicle or would they stay away and/or possibly try to protect the house??

I just though it would be an interesting discussion because her deaf springer has actually done it....luckly it was a friend that pulled up, but you never know.

We figured that unfortunately, George loves and trusts everyone and probably would go say hi and hope into the car. I came to this when the first time he met my brother, he hopped into his car when he was loading it up to go to school.....Beppo on the other hand, is very cautious about new people and I really don't think that he would get into someone's car without knowing them.

Just wondering your thoughts

I have three corgis and I would have to say that at least Chip & Dale would not hop up into a stranger's car. My boys love my husband very much but Dale fights tooth and nail when my husband takes him to our truck on leash without me. He keeps pulling back and looking for me to come to. My husband was going to take him to the store without me the other day and Dale wouldn't even go, he turned around and came back to where I was standing. Chip is almost the same except he will go with my husband but it is not a willing thing. Last year we were at the flea market and a lady just scooped Chip up and he wasn't happy and Chip LOVES people but on his terms. Taffy is only 4 months old so she is too little to decide yet.

Lol, mine isn't a personality thing. Westin refuses to even get in cars. He won't get up that high. You have to physically pick him up for him to even get near a car.He might go up to a stranger and be petted, but unless they physically took him, he wouldn't get in a car.

My Pixel would walk right up to be petted. The minute you try to grab her though she will start growling. She won't jump into cars though. She always looks back at me to see if it is okay. Widget won't go near the car, period.

Colby would go willingly, without a fight...he loves rides in the car...and he loves people that pay attention to him and if he was let out in the yard alone he'd be "see you bozos this dude offered me a ride in the car and i bet he even lets mes it in the front seat!!"....

cammie wouldnt go, shes still too little and doesnt like the car...plus if she had a leash on, forget it...she'd park her little fanny and make you drag her....stubborn little girl!!

Charlie would definitely run up to someone's car to say hello. He (like some others) hasn't figured out how to get into a car by himself yet, but I expect that he would let some friendly person pick him up...especially if they had a treat.

From watching his behavior at the dog park, it wouldn't take much for someone to just clip a leash on him there and walk out. I watch him every second!

Its harder to get George out of a car than into a car. He will do everything he can to stay in the car until he gets to go somewhere else. You can't fool him either, you can't just drive around the block or just run an arrand without getting out of the car....if we go for a car ride and he doesn't get to get out, he will not hop out of the car. He is VERY stubborn...Beppo on the otherhand. He won't even get in the car with one of my roommates...it has to be either myself or my fiance- no other way.

Ein would walk right up to the car. The person could pick her up and she would go with them. She loves going on car rides. But she would not jump into the car by herself.

I don't think mine would go. When I have my daughter put the leashes on the dogs they look to me like are you sure? Then run back again like are you really sure?
So much for being 5's huh? lol

I really don't know. Both dogs love people. Felicia has a high energy when she greets. Its run up, jump up, maybe a kiss if they are at her level then she is off exploring again. Cody approaches with a more subdued, sweet way. Leaning on the person and staying for how ever long they want to pet him. If a car pulled up I think that they might be a bit more cautious if I wasn't there.

I am however paranoid that someone is going to steal them from the car. I use to be that way with Felicia when she was a pup. I am now really worried about someone taking Cody since he is purebred. I always make sure I lock the door and every time I go to the car I hold my breath until I see him.

Will is very friendly when we are out and about, but for someone else to try and put him in their car they would be better off trying to catch the wind. He tolerates short rides with me to the local dog park. For anything else he has to be crated (which is safer anyway).

*~* Midnight & Sunshine are extremely friendly girls.

This thread topic actually made me nervous...but, CURIOUS as well.

I am going to test this question. I am going to have my neighbor try and approach Midnight & Sunshine and see if he can put a leash on them first and then try and pick them up to put them in his car.
My neighbor is friendly to Midnight & Sunshine but they do not see him all the time.

He is just an acquaintance.

I shall test this.....and let you all know !
