Finding a Fluffy - 02-15-2008, 01:31 PM

How does one find a fluffy? I'm not in a hurry or anything.

I have a 1.5 year old male Pem now and have been thinking about getting him a little sister. We'd be looking to get an AKC female Pem puppy (8-12 weeks old) anytime in the next year or so. I just love the way the fluffies look. Either way we're going to get a second Pem, I'd just love for it to be a fluffy. We live in San Antonio, TX. Traveling to pick her up wouldn't really be an issue.

Any advise on finding a fluffy?

You might want to shoot an email to Jaime at Overo Corgis in Buda, TX. She is a reputable breeder and runs the annual regional Corgi picnics and participates in rescue. Welcome to Overo Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Buda, Texas

All the reputable breeders can end up with some fluffies despite all the time and effort they put into "building a better Corgi".

Jaime took a couple of months to answer my email last Fall when I was looking for a Corgi, but she did eventually respond, so don't give up on her...she's apparently just very busy. She may be able to help you find a fluffy since she's "in the Corgi loop" and offer you advice on breeding Corgis.

How old is a corgi puppy before it shows that it will be a fluffy? How common is it? I would not breed her, but I would like to get her as a small puppy. If I just routinely call all corgi litters in the papers as they're listed do you think I'd eventually find one?

A recessive gene causes the fluffy coat. It's not terribly uncommon, but is a conformation fault, so fluffies should be spayed/neutered (not bred).

Jaime is planning a litter in March. She probably already has a waiting list, but since she does the annual Corgi picnics, she knows all the area/state Corgi people and should be able to put you in contact with other breeders in the area.

Of course you will eventually find one. Especially since you said you are willing to wait up to a year.

Take the advice Chris offered about going the reputable breeder route - they are going to recognize fluffies in their litters much more readily than the breeders you'll be dealing with by calling ads in the paper, many of which may have never heard of a fluffy even if they have had one in a litter.

You might also try Cassie Lynch, with Wisky River Corgis (yes it's Wisky -- not Whiskey). She is in San Antonio.
