Can Your Corgi Do This? -
02-15-2008, 07:28 PM
In the past week Cody has learned that he can stand on his hind legs. Well I wouldn’t call it standing exactly its more like balancing on his bunny butt. He can do it for quite a while too. It is sooooo cute! I have never had a dog that could do it. Dose anyone else have a corgi that can?
FYI He is doing while I am typing this. I am munching on some popcorn and looked over and he is just sitting up without being asked. I think I created a cutie monster.

" A Pembroke Corgi" : "When we are born...our ears are down...our tails are docked & we wear no frown. As we mature...the ears come up...our personality develops...no more a pup. When we chew our bone...the legs come out...and the "Flying Squirrel" lies alone. A corgi is a wonderful breed...much LOVE from owner to Canine...is received."

It is a talent that not many Corgis have or display unless they are trained/encouraged to perform and don't present a risk of injury from being overweight. It is a very cute thing to do.

Duncan does it when he wants to see something that is a little higher up, like on the stands or coffee table. I try not to encourage it, do to his long back, I don't want any back injuries or sprains. Guess I'm just over motherly about that. I don't even let him go upstairs in our house. It's and old house and the stairs are steep, I worry about him running fast down them and falling. So far, he has never gone upstairs that I know of.

Ein is doing it sometimes but it's more on accident when she wants to get something in our hands.

Westin's never done that! How do you train it? just set him on his butt? show him how?

I just taught it by grabbing my clicker, putting Shippo in a sit, and then dangling highly valuable treats over his head. When he'd kindof sit up trying to reach them, even just a little bit, I'd click and treat. Over time, he'd sit up higher and higher, for longer periods of time during the training sessions, basically teaching himself to balance. After we had that down, I'd only reward him for sitting on his haunches, as opposed to trying to stand up on his hind legs. It took some time because he had to learn how to balance properly, but it is such a cute trick lmao...

Pip learned it when I was teaching him not to jump on people. I laughed at him and it stuck. He does it now for attention.
