corgi mixes

I currently have a 12 yr old female PWC that I adopted through corgi rescue 4 years ago and am now looking into adopting another. Problem, few pure corgi's available in our area and I was advised that a male is a better match than another female (even though my female is NOT alpha at all). There is a male corgi/doxie mix at a shelter available which I haven't met yet. My sister had a doxie when she was a child and they are sweet (but not as smart or with as much attitude as a corgi and they are similar body types) so I'm familiar with doxies. Question, does anyone out there have any familiarity with corgi/doxie mixes and any advice about whether to pursue it or not? I'd appreciate hearing from someone with experience with this mix. Thank you.

Shelly,

Where are you in relation to LA? I know county wise, etc that can cover a rather large geographic area, but I do know there have been some purebreds to show up in some of the county shelters there. The So Cal Pem club rescue program and Arleen Rooney with <http://www.hugadog.com/amrt/sacr.html> might be able to help you. Males generally are a better match to go with a female already in the home, but sometimes even tho' the in home female would be okay with another female, none of the females in a rescue program will get along with another female.

I don't have personal experience with a corgi x doxie mix; I have heard how delightful they are from people who have them on other lists. Biggest thing is will you have a good personality mix between your girl and the new guy.

Unhappy

I have had people tell me that My lil Dig was part dachshund and part corgi and if he was - it was a great mix. He had many corgi traits - the biggest was his love for food and I see so many of Digger's actions in Chip. He also had the thyroid problem which is a dachshund thing from what I have been told and that wasn't a good thing. I wish you luck and I am so curious as to what this puppy looks like. I would love another one that looked like Dig but I don't think that would be good for the pup or me.

corgi mixes

Debbie, I adopted my current corgi from the So. Cal. club (Jane Anderson), and have done paperwork with Arleen (St. Anthony's) but thus far the matches either didn't suit my needs (behavior issues or pre-existing health issues), and the females I was interested in she was sure wouldn't work with my Reba. Thus far my Reba has a best buddy, another rescued PWC female, also 12 years old and they get along great, so if there's a potential problem with getting another female it would be the possible adoptee's attitude problem. There was one male PWC at a shelter up for adoption but my mother-in-law passed away the day before and I couldn't get over there to check it out instantly and it was snapped up. To answer your question, I'm only an hour from L.A.

Shelly, I suspected as much. Therein is the problem sometimes - a home you really want to adopt to, but all the ones that come in aren't good w/females or other dogs in general. <sigh> I know Arleen posts a pretty good volume of rescues for the area in shelters. Some from Petfinders and then some she's contacted about privately. Hope the right one comes along soon and maybe it'll be the little corgi x doxie fellow.
