The "Humane Society" being referred to here is the HSUS (Humane Society of the United States). As I said, HSUS is the largest animal rights organization in the world and the richest. The animal rights agenda is to end ALL animal use and that includes pets. I've quoted them time and time again. And yes, Obama is getting support from them.

I have posted HSUS proposed legislation time and time again to this forum, some defeated and some passed. In past discussions, we even figured out IF you Michael were a resident of Albuquerque, NM - just on a typical day you and Taylor enjoy, there are enough violations that you could be charged with animal cruelty. I'm not making this stuff up - Taylor would never get to enjoy off lead bush walks, because he would always have to be on lead - by law and one not longer than six feet. He would also HAVE to be neutered by law. That is HSUS type legislation and yes their fingers are very much in the national legislative process, PAWS being just one example. I've talked about this stuff over and over. So when in a Q & A a political candidate at ANY level comes out and says, "yes, I support animal rights" then the pet owning public sits up and takes notice. And they do go further and explain what animal rights means and if the candidate realizes what they are saying they support.

I thought this was an interesting read. Obama doesn't even own a pet so he must be a really big animal lover with animals best interest at heart. Some people will say anything to get a vote. Why should he care if we can't own our animals, he doesn't own one anyway.

This Years Presidential Candidates Pets:

Here's how some of this year's presidential candidates weigh in with their first pets:

Barack Obama - has no pets, but has promised his children a dog.

Hillary Rodham Clinton - has Seamus a Lab.

Mike Huckabee has Jet the 9-year-old black Lab, Sonic the 1 1/2-year-old Shih Tzu.

John Edwards has a golden retriever and chocolate Lab.

John McCain – Sam the English Springer spaniel, Coco the mutt, turtles named Cuff and Link, Oreo the black and white cat, a ferret, three parakeets and 13 saltwater fish.

Rudy Giuliani has no pets either.

Mitt Romney – Had a weimaraner that recently past away.

Which first pet would you vote for? Vote for your Favorite First Pet.

You don't need to own a pet to respect/like/love animals just like you don't need to own a gun to be an abusive/aggressive/violent person.
Suffice to say that Barack has promised his children a dog which might mean something to some people who want to speak in terms of black and white whenever words like animal rights and humane society are mentioned.
I support some aspects of these organisations and what they proclaim. I see things in grey terms.

Kris - New Zealand does not vaccinate dogs for rabies. The last known rabies case here was around 50 years ago. We do vaccinate dogs for rabies when they must travel abroad.

There was a national poll conducted last week in New Zealand and 50% of those polled would vote for Barack Obama for President, 30% would vote for Hillary Clinton while the rest ( 20%) had no opinion.
In a runoff between Obama and John McCain, Obama won that too.
Seems to me that is much what will happen in the USA though in NZ Obama has more respect across the board among the population

Rabies is much easier to control when one lives on an island. Those of us on continents with borders that wild animals can cross at will cannot eridicate rabies. That's the reason for the concern over rabies vaccinations in the US and Europe.

Surely it depends on the type of wild animal and what each country is doing to eradicate or control those rabies-carrying animals.

It's an awful lot of wilderness you're talking about. Over 3,000 miles (5061 kilometers). And that's just the Canadian/US border, not the wilderness along it.

They do try to remove the animals they find who are sick with rabies, but that's hard when you don't always know where they are. Many of these animals are in areas where people rarely if ever go. That's why it's so hard to control it and why we can't eridicate rabies in the US.

Europe has the same type situation.
