Broken Toe? - 03-10-2008, 06:01 PM

We came home from the vet and the pups went out back. Well they were playing and when they come back inside trevor was limping bad. he would cry if we touche it so i soaked him in a hot bath for 15 minutes and i was able to rol him over and carefully look at his foot. there is nothing in it, no cuts, or splinters, but it does look bruised. it isnt swollen but could it be broken? if so is there anything to do about it, if it isnt heeled in a couple of days we will take him to the vet, can we give him a baby asprin?

If it was broken it would swell. Ice it if you think it's bruised or sprained. Always ice anything like this, heat will increase any bleeding. (Bruising is bleeding under the skin.)

What I would do is not not give him anything for it. If you do he might use it more. If it hurts he'll stay off it.

If he were mine I'd try the ice and crate rest. (Meaning he stays crated and you take him out on a leash to go potty.) Do that for at least 24 hours. If no improvement go to the vet. If improved, crate rest for a few more days.

THis used to happen to Nick all the time. He would be playing at the dog park and then once he got home he'd be lame. We couldn't figure it out either. We took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with everything form Pano to Lymes Disease. The diagnoses that made the most sense was a slight sprain which could occur frequently because of their leg assembly. I agree with Peggy rest is probably all your little guy needs. However you should definitely take him to the vet.
