One ear up, one ear down
Our cardi, Ace, has one ear standing up perfectly, while the other is bent in the middle. You might be able to see this from my avatar. He is now 13 1/2 weeks old and we are starting to wonder if we should be doing something to help the other ear out. The strange thing is that the ear that is down was the first to come up. At about nine weeks it came up strong for about a day or two. He began having wax build up int that ear which we cleaned out and then the ear folded (not down, but out). The other ear came up about a week and a half a go and looks to be holding just fine.
Is there anything we can do to help the other ear out? We started giving him puppy vitamins with calcium yesterday. Thanks. Jim and Bethany |

We just got our puppy a week ago. When we picked him up the breeder had put tape on his ears. She said this was to protect them because the cartilidge can get 'broken'. He did not like the tape and would scratch it. The vet said we could take it off so we did. So far he has one ear up and one down at 10 weeks old.

You can tape them. Good instructions can be found on <http://www.phi-vestavia.com> under the articles link. Mole skin, masking tape (although I believe Cathy uses duct tape on the page) can be used. And once they come up, then when teething starts, they'll like droop or drop again. Some folks (and I'm one of them) have had good success with adding 500 mg vitamin C. I'm not one to advocate over the counter calcium as a supplement, but using the vitamin formulas for dogs with it in them is a good idea. I also add cottage cheese, cheese, and extra yougurt to boost the calcium intake.

*~* jprechel, Midnight...my tri~color is 7 months old now and she also has one ear that is bent...just like your puppy. Midnight is an agressive chewer...she likes to chew on her Pig Skin Twists & Nylabone. I notice that in the morning...both of her ears are up and alert......but, during the day they fluctuate. Sometimes, they will both be up...while at other times during the day, her right ear will become flopped down and bent. When she chews on the bone...the ear will start to come up...and usually stays up for awhile. Bizarre...I know. Sunshine (Midnight's sister) has always had both ears up...she never had any flopping issues. The good thing is...Midnight is NOT jealous of Sunshine !!! ( kidding... ) *~* Nikki

Glad to know it's not just us. We are going to see if the vitamins help any. We started using cheese in our training sessions so hopefully that calcium will help as well. In a week if there isn't a change we might attampt the ear taping. Thanks for the website Debbie. We found it very informative!
Ace likes to chew ALOT. (He can chew up an edible nylabone with in hours. And you should see his toys. He loves the tags! They are always the first to go... within minutes of getting it.) But we haven't noticed that helping the ear situation. How do we know if his cartlidge is "broken"? |

I'm an advocate of calcuim as a supplement for puppies in particular and if the calcuim helps Corgis to strengthen their ear muscles, well and good. And it just confirms why it is recommended for puppies to have extra calcium.
Corgis should have both ears errect by the time they are three months old or just a smidgeon over this age. Otherwise taping is almost certainly necessary and the websites to help in this process are found within a previous thread or postings on Go Corgi. |

Jprechel,
There are several different strengths of nylabone, Darci used to go through quick too, then I got her the one rated as most durable for the very heavy chewer and that one will last her several weeks up to a month or so sometimes. You may already know all of this if so disregard

Cindy,
My Cody never likes Nylabones - I have no idea why. I would stand there at the Pet store and look at the huge assortment of them and would buy several, and he never had interest in them - just his pig ears and sometimes the "dingo" brand rawhides. Linda |
