I put my foot down. I was walking this huge Bull Mastiff-Great Dane cross for a woman who couldn't handle him. The dog is a danger to any other dog in the universe. So I insisted he must be muzzled or else I am not exercising him further. The owner can't find a muzzle to fit this giant of a dog. So I said to find someone else to walk him. I am not going to walk a loaded gun even though I got a lot of co-operation out of him in using Cesar Millan methods. With a muzzle, he can't bite or kill other dogs - unless he sat on a toy dog - and he could run around unleashed which is what he needs.
That's probably the answer - any dangerous or aggessive dog should be muzzled when off-leash in public. That would stop the fights and the risks - so that Chip's Mom and others can give their Corgis the thrill of off-leash pleasure at dog parks etc
Go Corgi members discovered that in Italy around 90 breeds have been declared dangerous and if you take a dog from one of these breeds for a walk etc in public, they must be muzzled. That is going far too far and is ridiculous but it is along the lines that may need to be implemented in certain circumstances.

And Corgis are on that list of 90 breeds in Italy.

Yes, and it is. Just reminding everyone that corgis are on that list.

Peggy - that was not the point I was trying to make. The point, for your benefit, was that there are many breeds in Italy that must wear muzzles in public places as a pointer towards applying it to having poorly behaved dogs in the USA and everwhere else, muzzled at dog parks when off' leash. Are your Corgis poorly behaved - I don't think so.

No my dogs are not poorly behaved. But then again I don't take them to dog parks. I'm not a fan of dog parks.

Muzzling a dog won't necessarily stop a dog from growling or snarling. And that might make another dog attack him and then he's defenseless. I don't think aggressive dogs belong in dog parks. Aggressive dogs should not be playing with other dogs. Let them run in their own back yards.

Well, we have some agreement then, because I am not a fan of dog parks either.

A muzzle is kind of like a red flag and if I see a dog wearing one, I would steer my trio away from that dog. Good for you Michael - insisting the dog wear one.

In New Zealand you are supposed to have any dog muzzled in public if they are one of the four banned breeds or they have been declared dangerous.

It is that way here too, in some areas. Fortunately right now, BSL (breed specific legislation) is not nation wide. And many of us are fighting such laws.

IMO, you punish the deed not the breed. ANY dog can be dangerous.

I would think that having a dog-aggressive dog muzzled and taking it to the park might help it learn to be a bit better socialized. However, I would probably keep it on a leash as well and make introductions to other dogs. Like Peggy said, now the muzzled dog is defenseless and open to attack.
