You've got a point there!
Yeah, I think it says they're way too inclusive with the list. Like I said any dog can be dangerous. And in some places all it takes is a dog or two of a certain breed to bite someone and they get on a list like this.
And you know, you never hear the dogs side of the story. Like what happened before the bite, was the dog being teased, tormened, hurt? Just that it bites. Sometimes the dog has a good reason for biting and it's an expected response. In that case the dog should not be blamed or punished.

I have to admit, I really don't understand these vicious breed laws. I always thought there were dangerous/vicious dog laws covering all dogs, regardless of breed, that attacked or had bitten someone.

There should be that kind of law in place that covers dog bites. And with leash laws that should be enough.
The BSL is a foot in the door by the Animal Rights groups. Ban one breed. Add another breed, and so on and so on.

My local dog park has the rules posted. NO vicious dogs, owners must control the dog, and they must leave if the dog gets aggresive. Almost no one reads the rules. Some don't follow it anyway . But, I have embarassed a couple of owners into leaving or controlling their dogs better by telling them the rules. Someone was nice enough to show me the sign when I was new there. I'm glad I read it. Bailey only goes in when I first observe who's there. Not much anymore. Some responsible owners leave when needed, or don't come in if the dog is acting funny at the gate.
If embarassment and peer pressure will not fix things, my cell phone and the police will fix it. I will explain this nicely first, before doing it. But one warning is all you get. By that time Bailey and I will be outside the fence. Diplomatically telling an owner that all the other dog owners there know the rules, and are agreeing with me is all it has taken so far. Most don't want to argue with all the other dog owners.

All dog parks, in my area have rules and you can't miss the signs when you go into the park. I think it's a matter of whether the owners care to follow the rules or not. Embarrassment and peer pressure may work, but it could also lead to a nasty confrontation. Our sign has instructions and phone numbers for reporting vicious dogs.
I go during off peak hours and only let Pip in it when it's empty. I take him for off leash exercise, not socialization, so it works for me. If it's in use, we walk the trails and kill some time until the dogs using it are done. I don't think throwing my dog into a fenced in area, off leash, with dogs of different sizes, breeds, temperaments, and hoping for the best, is a good option for me.

We only go about once a month, and I know Charlie has a lot of fun. I take him when there is an organized Small Dog Meetup, so if there were a situation, there is a group of us there for "peer pressure", not just me. I haven't seen a dog fight break out, but there are too many people reading a book, or talking to each other and not watching their dog.

There is a slight chance of a confrontation with another owner, that's true.
If someone challenges me, I will back down immediately, and leave the fenced in area. From behind a tree I will call the police. Then from outside the fence I will try and convince the three disipline, registered triple black belt, and all the others on my side not to throw the other dog owner over the fence. I think I can convince them not to.......... maybe.
It would be someone I don't know entering the park after I was already in the park. I know all the regulars.

I started a separate thread with this, but will add it in here as well. Need to read this story:
CIGRescue • NO DOGS ALLOWED

I know I'm new to this site but I have to say that person had to know what his dog was capable of especially since his dog didn't stop after the first incident. Tomrrow when you go, go with a camera and if this guy shows up again take pictures of both him and his dogs. If he confronts you tell him you thought his dogs were so attractive ... and leave. Later turn his photo in to who ever is the "Controller". I'll bet, after today, he'll think you are there for that anyway and keep a tighter eye on his dog and maybe not come back for fear he'll be fined. If that don't work ... do like Maine, post his picture and his dogs in the paper along with an article on what happened in the park. Post the article on the dog park gate, that might stop him from going in.
I'm afraid my temper would have shown it's ulgy head .. Harley would have gone in the car and I would have confronted the guy ... Can ya tell ya hit a nerve ...

He hasn't shown up since that day, thankfully... it's been days now, and I haven't witnessed a single fight since that one... this fight was the first one I saw at this particular dog park as well... I wonder if after I left, somebody told him to leave.

My expectactions in New Zealand is that every dog off-leash and un-muzzled in public places is going to be either friendly towards the dogs that I have let off-leash (currently that is Taylor, Connie and the black Lab Nina and any member of the WWCWC), or is not going to physically aggressively display their intolerance, or are under tight control of their owner/handler.
