I find it interesting too. Because I had taken it for granted that my dogs yawn through boredom or tiredness. And that any early morning yawn was for the same reason as mine would be - not as much sleep as he would like or need. But there you go. I had this explanation given by an authoriative person and it was reinforced by others. So I suppose one can analyise the act of their dog yawniing to fit its apparant true description. I must question if dogs are in fact tired in the morning when they awake - because dogs nap a little or a lot during the day and then most get this huge night-time sleep. It is one of the reasons, I encourage Taylor to go to bed when I do not at some child's time of 7 or 8pm. And Taylor usually gets his late night toilet walk at anything up til midnight. In fact there were two successive occasions when he had substantial walks between 12.30am and 1.30am due to rainy weather at earlier times. He's actually come to like his late night outings. But I digress. So your dog wakes up in the morning and yawns away. THe experts say he is "charging up." Well, this fits in doesn't it? I suppose it is a form of stretching out, limbering up. ON the other hand, if they have been waiting for a long time for the house to awake, their yawning could indeed represent a degree of stress.

Michael,

I think it is the charging up - when I first open the crate to let him out in the morning, he doesn't even want to come out - he rolls over, stretches, yawns, of course and makes all sort of noises and just seems to give me the impression that he is comfy and would rather just lay a bit more - until he sees someone eating their morning cereal!!

However, there are other times during the day, when he does something naughty and we may have to scold him with a "no" and then he will "yawn" and I now see that he is trying calm himself down by doing that.

Same thing with Jackie, Linda. Half the time she just lays in there with this "Are you kidding me?" look, and I have to give her the "Let's Go" command, so she knows I mean business!

Jane,

Sometimes Maxi will flop on the ground like he is so tired, and then other times he will lay down and then flop over on his side or back. He usually only flops on his side or back when he is on the couch or bed. It is funny when he flops on the ground, we usually say to him "It is so hard being Maximus, did you have a rough day, being petted, playing, eating, sleeping and going potty, what a hard life you have" He usually just lays there and wags is little butt.

If the doggie door is not open then Reba will come up to me whereever I am and give me a blatant "stare-out" until I get it that she needs to go potty. Then if I say "good potty" she'll race towards the door.

We are doing very well around here. Still some grooming issues, mainly that Pockets hates being brushed. We have only had 2 accidents in the house in as many weeks and both times he was very excited and tinkled waiting to get out. The one time we were at the back door! He is still mouthy and has to make noise when told no on something. He also still has not realized that he can sleep outside his kennel but in due time.
Yesterday we were over my sisters and for the first time let him play with the golden. The golden (Draco) is only 2 so still puppy brained in some ways and forgets he is so much bigger so we waited to let them play. They have sniffed each other and been close in kennels so we thought it was good timing to try. They did well. When Draco was thinking about getting rough Pockets would use his size and run under him confusing the golden. It was pretty cute if I say so myself! I haven't posted in a long time so thought I should send another update along!

Thanks! He is a good boy. Hes a stinker but a good boy! Today is our first large exposre since we are going to a birthday party so we will see. He has a habit of crawling onto my shoulder when he is nervous and I am holding him. I think he tries to hide in my hair or something! We will see how it goes!

If Pockets unfortunately objects to a brush at this stage in his life, then make fuller use of the comb - a steel comb with small, narrow separated teeth is best -and instead of a brush use a grooming cloth.
Perhaps at some later time he will lose his dislike for brushes - mind you, there are a huge variety of brushes and the bristles vary. Maybe the one you have is too hard and a softer more flexible bristled brush might be acceptable to Pockets or vice versa.
