Spoilt & Rotten update

Yes, I may just have to do that. It sort of feels like punishing him keeping him crated all day like that. And he and Spoilt just love to play together but I have just got to find SOMETHING that works. Maybe if I do that for a day or two he will get the hint and start going outside so I can let him out to play with Spoilt. I also don't want him to think of the crate as a place for punishment either. He is not giving me a hard time about sleeping in there so I would hate for that to be ruined. I have a sort of baby gate thing made for small dogs to sit outside in. I was using it for Spoilt when I first got him. Maybe I should stick him inside that thing in between potty sessions and see if that would work. That way he isn't in his crate but contained to a small area.

Puppies are a lot of work and two puppies double the work. While it often sounds as coming across mean the frustrations Woogiebear is experiencing are a big reason it is advised to not to get a second puppy until the first one is firm in its training and/or even waiting until the first one is a couple of years old. Rotten, for whatever advancement he had made, sounds like he is regressing since Spoilt's arrival. (And I wouldn't worry at all about Spoilt's ears right now. The threads on taping will give you plenty of direction and ideas on that should you decide you need to tape. <G>)

I'd try the baby gate/pen thing you have for inside play time. Maybe alter the morning routine; out first thing in the morning, breakfast, playtime in the pen and a final trip out before you leave for work. Also use it for free time in the house until he gets more with the routine. He's also having to unlearn bad habits he developed early on when your company was there.

Deb, you made a good point. Cody is 7 months old and potty trained, and for me, I really could not see having another puppy right at this time. He requires so much of my time.

When Riley was a youngster and the poop was not forth coming, I would jog her half a block or walk her very quickly until the urge came about. It helps stimulate the process.

From somewhere many years ago, I learnt that it was slow exercise that better promoted a dog to want to relieve himself/herself rather than fast and furious exercising such as running and chasing after a stick or a ball etc. But, hey, any exercise such as walking for 10 minutes or so, is going to help.

It sounds like Woogiebear spends quite a bit of time outside with Rotten trying to get him to go. She did mention that she walked him.(I don't think the issue here is getting his bowels to move). I think the issue is bigger with him thinking it is okay to relieve himself in the house and her trying a find a way to break him of this habit. He is holding it and waiting for the right moment to deposit it in the house when she is not looking. I think that he thinks he is suppose to poop in the house because that is what he has been used to doing for a few months now.

I second the time in the crate though, at least until he figures out poops are for outside then allow more time outside the crate.

I agree with Cindy - put him in the crate more. Make it positive and don't scold him when you put him in there. Then take him out to go poop and if he doesn't go, put him in his crate again, and try 20 minutes later - if he doesn't go, try again - If you want him and spoilt to play, have them play outside, in case Rotten decides to go; eventually he is going to have to poop outside.(and when he does, praise him like crazy and give him a yummy treat!) Hopefully, this will work for you. I am really out of any other suggestions.
