Zero had a seizure today

I heard what I thought was Zero scratching himself under my bed- where he sleeps. But the noise got louder and he didn't stop when I yelled at him- I thought the little fatty was stuck under there actually
Anyway, I knew something was up when he didn't respond so I pulled him out from under the bed and screamed for Holly that he was having a seizure.
It lasted about a minute then it took a few more minutes for him to get coordination back. He just rolled himself onto Holly's lap and looked confused. Poor pup. Anyway, he's back to normal now, so we'll just keep an eye on him to see if he has any more of them...

Aww, that's terrible...I hope he's okay...!

My grandmother has a German Shepard mix (very old dog) and it's been having seizures for sometime. The vet gave her this really great medication though and the dog has been responding really well to it. Next time I see her I'll get the name of it...!

If it was anything but a very small seizure I'd have him looked at by your vet. I lost a dog to idiopathic epilipsy because we were waiting to see if he'd have more seizures. Well, he did and it killed him. I'd go for aggressive treatment and medication rather than waiting if I had to do it over.

I live with a vet, she saw him during the seizure. As far as we know this is his first seizure. We agreed that putting him phenobarbitol isn't worth the risk for only one seizure. It's pretty rare to have them die because of a seizure... Of course if he has more we'll do bloodwork to check his liver and then put him on phenobarb. I'm just not willing to put him on it when I don't know... He's young, he'd need to stay on it forever which could take toll on his liver and it's an appetite stimulant... not that I'd not put him on it if he needed it, but we're still working on the weight thing, and if we don't know for sure...

Peggy I'm sorry you lost a dog from it... How many did he have?
I'm sure *god forbid* if something happens I'll eat my words, but I'm just not willing to go the drug route yet, which obviously I can't because Holly said no (she's the boss! well I argue a lot, but she's the internist with the DVM behind her name and not me-yet), but if he does have another one he's getting an MRI first thing and then we'll put him on meds.

I will He's back to normal. He played for over an hour at the dog park today. We took them to the one off 164th.
Jordi is pissed he's been getting the shaft today since Zero has been clingy...

They need to learn how to share!!! One on each side.

Glad to hear he is acting normal. I trust that you and your roommate are keeping a *very* close eye on the Z man!

Well I guess you can't get more of an on the spot opinion than having a vet witness the seizure. You aren't missing any macadamia nuts by chance are you?

I hope it was an isolated incident and will be thinking good thoughts for him.

Can't get more of a closer eye watching than in bed with me lol. My boys are rarely alone, so I'm watching him closely.

Thanks Debbie and lol... yeah, I have GREAT perks from living with a vet- Most of my closest friends are vet's so I've got lots of people to ask for advice. Equal amounts of small animal vets and equine vets so I'm set
But no- I'm not a fan of nuts so he hasn't had any. I did about pass a 24ct gold brick when my dad proudly informed me that Piper loves grapes... we have since been giving him lessons in the PEOPLE FOOD ONLY categories.... Jeeeeze.
He did however eat one of those little silicone packets, but after his seizure... but most of the beads just scattered. He likes chewing tags so that packet was similar I think... anyway, now I'm just teasing him that he's going to grow fake breasts from eating the silicone beads LOL

You wanna share a good emergency vet in the area? I am not too happy with our vet and am always looking for suggestions.

Take him to Holly She's good... and not just saying that. As far as emergency vets- I don't like St Francis... EVS (they changed their name to Columbia River sumthin sumthin) is where Holly refers cases they aren't equipped to deal with. They're at the corner of Fourthplain/Andressen. Or, Dove Lewis in Portland is the emergency God in the Portland/Vancouver area and worth the drive. I'm trying to get hired there right now. Too bored with just school, and now that my horse is gone, I want a job!

Where's Holly at? She knows Corgi's that a plus! Yeah we usually go to St. Francis but we've had some bad luck lately. 4th Plain and Andreson? There's a vet there?

Bored huh? I got lots to pass onto you! School, work, pup. Which one you want? On second thought, you can have the homework! Liam's not up for grabs! (Even thought he is trying to bite my computer right now, jealously!)

When's the horse coming back? He's at bootcamp isn't he?

You've got a PM

True will be at training for at least through the end of the summer. We'll see how well he does and how much the trainer likes him, which so far, he's stolen everyone's hearts and proved himself to be exactly what his bloodlines intended him on being. I'm very proud of my little booger... he'll be chasin' cows in no time! For you horsey people (I know you're out there ) he's in training to get finished as a reiner and for working cow.
