Kennel for Corgi?

Hi,

I am new to GoCorgi as well as a fairly new dog/Corgi owner as well. I am going on vacation next week and I am DREADING taking my 6-month old corgi to the kennel for an extended stay (9 days ).

Her kennel is run by her vet, and we are having her spayed during her stay, so I am not worried that she won't be cared for.

Can anyone here share with me their experience kenneling their corgi? Will she really "know" it's been that long? Will she be mad at me? Has your dog ever gotten sick at a kennel?

Like I said, I'm a New Dog Owner, so please let me know how your corgi handled being in a kennel!

Thank you,
FoxysMommy

Do you not have faith and/or do not like your vet. Your vet should be your friend and just the a person that takes care of your animal medically. I would leave any of our dogs with our Vet if we had to. We had Muggie neutered (our Chihuahua)last week and the vet told us that the staff held him and carried him around when he woke up from his surgery, the vet told us that she too at held him in her lap while she did paper work. They greet all the regular dogs that come to the office by name and make over them. You can come and visit our animal anytime if they have to be keep there for any reason. I would trust our vet with any of our dogs. If you are comfortable with your vet you should not worry that your baby will be taken care of while you are gone and during and after surgery. I have never kenneled our dogs, but would in a second at our vet if the need ever arose.

I can completely relate to your being nervous about leaving your pup at the kennel. Even though I knew Dudley would be completely safe at his vet/kennel, I still worried about leaving him because nobody can take care of my pet like I can
I agree with jhemphill though. If you feel comfortable with your vet and trust him/her, than I would not worry too much. I'm sure you can call and check up on your pup while you're away to set your mind at ease. Also, Dudley was not mad at all when I had to leave him. In fact, he was so excited to go home that he ran and jumped in my car (something he never does).
Whatever you choose, as long as you are comfortable leaving her with a competent staff, I'm sure she will be fine when you return.

I DO like my vet. It's just that I am so new to all of this that the thought of having to leave her with someone outside our family causes some anxiety.

The staff at the vet does make a fuss over her when we go, and I am sure she'll get that kind of good attention. I was more worried about a kennel stay damaging her trust in me & my fiance.

I guess I'm just overthinking things!

Don't feel bad about overthinking anything--I felt the same way when I had to leave Dudley (4 months old) and it was only for one night! I'm leaving him this weekend again for two nights this time and I'm still worried about it! It only means you care I wouldn't worry about breaking the trust either. She'll be over excited to see you when you get back.

We've never kenneled our dogs, but I would be thrilled if I was able to leave them with our Vet hospital, I trust them without question to give our dogs the best possible care, next to me of course.

But I do understand your concern, when Dylan had to stay overnight last month after his ACL operation I worrried about him the same way you are worrying about your pup.

It sounds like she will be in good hands, but it's only natural that you will worry.

Foxysmommy,

I had a Pem that passed away this past December, at the age of 13. When she was 9, I had to kennel her and two of my cats because my daughter had won us a trip to Disneyworld. - they stayed with my vets office(for 9 days) and they took care of all 3 of them very well. I called 3 or 4 times while I was gone to check up on them and all went well. I was worried with my pem being somewhat older, but she did fine and was not "mad" at me once we came home. I had thought that maybe my cats would forget where their litter boxes were, but they didn't. Trust your vet, I think your dog will be in the best hands there.

:Thanks for the Vote of Confidence! I trust my vet, and I'm settling down about leaving her there. I just read some posts about spaying, too, so I'm glad she'll be there for a few days afterward. She's a hard one to keep down, so I'm sure she'd be trying to run up and down the stairs, jump off the couch, etc. with her stitches in.

Now, all I have to do is keep the separation anxiety (mine) in check, and look forward to vacation.

I think it will definitely be harder on you than on her! I know it's always harder on me when we have to be away from Jackie! Just think of the wonderful reunion when you return home, and enjoy your trip!

Foxysmommy,

yes, really a plus for you and her if she is recuperating there and will not have
any furniture to jump on. Just think, your vet will be right there to monitor her, and anything that she needs, will be attended to right away.

OOOOOh, it was such a difficult thing to do, leaving her off at the kennel. Even though I had made myself understand that she would be fine and have a good time, and the girl who took her was so good with her...it was still hard.

I couldn't even look at her as she was being taken away because I didn't want her to see me crying. I must've looked like such a baby to the other people in the waiting area. Oh well, none of them have corgis, so I doubt they would understand.

I'll be so excited to get home and see her again as well as come back to GoCorgi and read the latest "eccentric," corgi-related things we're all worrying about!

P.S.... thanks all for your kind advice. I'm so glad to have found a site like this one with other Corgi fans!
