Wiener Dog... NOT!! -
06-27-2006, 02:08 PM
OK, Although I've only had my Cardigan for a year, and before that I really never paid the breeds that much attention, I have never heard of Corgis referred to as "Wiener Dogs". The Other day when I was walking Snowdon we passed some individuals going in the opposite direction, just as we got out of earshot I distinctly heard one say to the other "what a cute little wiener dog". which at first surprised me, but then it kinda pushed me out of shape!
Not that there's anything wrong with the term "wiener dog", but I had always thought that it was used exclusively with the dachshund.
What would you think if your Corgi was referred to as a "wiener dog"?

Dudley has been referred to as a "weiner dog" but around here, that's just what people call dachshunds (sp?). I get that alot actually. "Oh, is he a weiner dog mix?" What is your dachsund mixed with? I've also heard beagle which kind of through me for a loop.
I guess just not enough people know what a cardi is, but it sure is funny seeing what people think their breed is!

Because of Abby's black and tan colours and tail, most non-dog adults ask is she a sort of miniature GSD, but the children and teens always notice her long body and ask if she is a sort of 'Sausage Dog'.

I haven't had anyone call mine a wiener dog but one time when we were traveling I had just put Emma in the car and was calling her "my little hairball" (one of my pet names for her) while shutting my car door. A man was taking his little piece of fluff out of his car. He gave me the evil eye as we were pulling out and it dawned on me he thought I was calling his dog a hairball! He couldn't see Em at all and must think I'm a jerk - good thing Hubby drives fast! LOL

T-Gal,
What a funny story! I can just see the look on the guys face now. He must have been so insulted!!
Podgorney,
Your dog a weiner dog? I would have politely turned around and said hello and corrected them by telling them what he really is. No one around here knows what Cody is when I mention his breed - they all say "they have never heard of this breed before" Some neighbors say "where is that dog with the short legs". However, we just got a new neighbor two houses down and she came over last week and said she had to meet my Corgi because she just loves them and has a friend that has one.

THat term - weiner - has never been used in my presence anywhere, But a couple of years ago a recently arrived young Iraki or Iranian asked me if Taylor was half a sausage dog. Well. maybe he is at that - since Corgis - Pems and Cardis have almost certainly got Dachsund in their makeup.

The little boy that lives next door to us loves to come over and play with our dogs. One day he and some of his friends were out when we had Maxi out. They all came over and asked if they could pet Maxi, and said that he looked like a hotdog. Well the little boy next door got quite upset with this and told his friends that Maxi was not a hotdog he was a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and that they could not pet him now because they had insulted him and then escorted them out of our yard. We were all shocked but appreciated his defense of Maxi's breed, I beleive that everyone on our street knows that Maxi is a Corgi, especially if they know this little boy.

Jodi,
I like your story of the little boy. I can picture it just as if I had been there.
There is more and more Corgis in my area ,everytime I see one being walked I want to stop and talk to the owners, usually when I am not able to since I am driving.
There are huge dogs at the park I go to let Duchess run loose. We were walking with two Great Danes that were 180 pound each and an Irish Wolf hound, "Higgens" who was as tall as the Danes. They are all so gentle with the smaller dogs, I have no fear of leaving Duchess walk with them. But when I see a Pit Bull or Shepherd type coming our way I keep her close to me.

Yes, Jane, you get to know what breeds to trust and what ones to treat with great caution.

My dogs have been called wiener dogs, I was asked if Montrose (as a pup) was a little fox! And Dylan, who was a thinner corgi as a pup, was seen my a man who asked me if he was a baby deer?

A BABY DEER !!!!! ROFL That is just the funniest description yet. Mind you, I have no idea what a baby deer looks like. I hope you told the man that Dylan was in fact your baby DEAR.
I can understand perhaps why someone thought Montrose was a little fox - Abby's face looks very fox-like in certain photos.
I am now getting a fit of giggles visualising the older fox and deer strolling along the street with you.
