Unexpected addition

Today I found out that my b/f agreed to take his parent's peekapoo for a week, starting tomorrow. He's a 9 year old very dominant male who is used to having free run of the house. The last time they got together the peekapoo decided that my Ein wasn't submissive enough and continually tried to hump him. Ein's not having that any more and they were constantly fighting.

My problem is that this dog will be in Ein's home. This is Ein's place to be top dog and there will be some issues. Sammy (peekapoo) does not stay in a crate during times when we're away like Ein. We also don't have a second crate since we only have one dog. I think that Sammy will be terrorizing Ein and we really don't have a (safe) place to fence off in the house for him to stay while we're at work.

Two days ago our air conditioning went nuts and now it gets too hot in the house for him to stay on the top two levels. (We have a split-level.)

Sammy is toy, food and attention possessive and will get aggressive when other dogs are around which I will not tolerate.

Anyone have ideas on how to make sure my dog still feels like this is HIS home and keeping this new guest in line? He already doesn't like me much because he has to do what I tell him when I'm around.

Would Sammy be okay in a laundry/bath room or kitchen? If so, you could seperate them (Gizmo in his crate) when you are home and take turns with them when you are.

remind Sammy 'your house, your rules!' and he can follow them or have bad consequences.
when he gets all dominant and snotty, flip him.
seriously, put him on his back, look him in the eye and remind him who is boss.

can you borrow a crate or afford a baby gate to lock him in someplace?

too bad you arent closer...we have 2 crates we arent using.

Also, you could use 2 (or more) large pillows, or some rubber made boxes and block him off that way when you're not home? I usually keep Gizmo out of the crate when we're not here. And he has the downstairs to himself. But when Winston was visiting... we put him in his crate and put them in 2 separate rooms because Winston barks... constantly..

If it's possible, get a crate this weekend that fits Sammy, and return it after he leaves?

That's the problem. Both bathrooms are upstairs and our air is out. I wouldn't want to leave him in a room that's going to get up to or above 90F. The laundry room is downstairs but there's exposed insulation and a hot water heater and no way to block them off. Also, Sammy isn't crate trained.

The only other thing I can think of would be to let him stay outside but we really don't want to do that. Crime and violence in our area has gone up drastically and there's a possibility that something would happen to him.

Oh yeah, he's going to know that. We kept him once before we got Ein and he learned quick. That's why he doesn't like me. The baby gate wouldn't be a problem but there's nowhere I can put it.

I've heard so many things about flipping dogs on their backs. I don't know if that might hurt him with his arthritis and such.

Heh, I don't think anyone on Gocorgi lives anywhere near me. Got to love the Atlanta area. Thanks for the advice!

Might just have to do that, put him in the laundry room and hope for the best. He's definitely not used to being in a crate and will probably be miserable but we've got to work something out.

Could you cover up the insulation? Even if its with blankets? or put a fan or 2 upstairs in the bathroom?

Sure. I used to live about 20 minutes from there. Now it's about an hour and change away. I love huskies but I couldn't imagine having one in Georgia. Blegh.

First dogs don't think that way. An alpha dog is an alpha dog no matter where they are. And a true alpha IS NOT the one who picks fights. A true alpha is a peacemaker and NOT a problem. (Do a serch on this site for "What Is An Alpha Dog".)

What you have here are two alpha wannabe's. Middle ranking dogs. Neither is a true alpha or you wouldn't be having a problem.

If Ein stays in his crate when you're gone then he should do that as usual. Put his crate in a room you can block off. If you don't have a baby gate, then use a table you can turn sideways, a chair turned sideways, trunk/footlocker type thing. Pillows IMO, will be moved by a determined dog.

I agree, the basement/lower level would be the best place.

Don't allow the humping. Make him get off your dog. Enforce rules and don't let your dog be bullied. Give Ein extra attention.

I'm trying to work something out. There's always been exposed insulation in that room. I'm very, very careful with Ein when he comes in while I'm doing laundry. I'll have to ask how destructive Sammy is with blankets and chewing.

If you mean the alpha roll, I don't recommend that. Even the Monk's of New Skete who first put it in a book of theirs no longer recommend it. You can get bitten doing this with a dog you don't know exceptionally well. (And this is NOT her dog.) So please DO NOT flip him on his back. You could be asking for trouble.

Yes, he can be hurt if he has arthritis. So no, don't do this. A dog in pain is even more likely to bite.

If your kitchen is dog safe (and Sammy is not a cabinet chewer) maybe you could block it off and put him in there.
