Well Cayleb come home today after he got fixed yesterday- he needs to wear a cone when we can not watch him but the poor guy, the only one that fit is to long for his short little legs. he can not walk with it on... what have some you done when they can't stop licking the sore spot...

I have not had a big problem with my guys licking incision sites. Once in awhile I have one that does and use the E (Elizabethan) collar.

Let your vet know that it is too big and he can't walk with it on. They should be able to exchange it for a smaller one.

I've seen some of the soft ones, called comfycones (All Four Paws Comfy Cone at PETCO) as well as the doughnuts I call them (hhttp://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3185093&lmdn=Dog+Health+Care)

Just 2 more ideas, and I know petsmart will take it back if it doesn't help.

Or you can trim it off.

I asked for a smaller one but the next size they had would have been to small so I trimmed some off the one we have but, since I ran to town (15 miles both ways) just for them to tell me it would be to small and got home again he has left it alone go figure... he is sleeping right now...

tonight will be the test when all of us want to sleep.. HE HATES THE CONE!

we live in a small town with no chain pet stores we have walmart and tsc that sell pet supplies and neither one of them have anything...

Thank you!

Poor guy! Duncan managed to destroy his collare within two days. I duct taped it in several places, but by the fourth day, I took it off and kept a close eye on him. He never licked his area.

Leo did not mess with his much. He had internal stitches so maybe that helps. When he wanted to lick his sore spot I distracted him with toys and hugs and we got through it without a cone. I did get to be with him for a week after while he was healing, he also took pain meds all week so maybe itching was kept to a minimum.

I wonder, if it's itching. If benadryl would be an option? I know that would be up to the vet. Or something to that effect.

Benedryl helps with itching caused by an allergy or bug bite when histimines are released into the body.

It shouldn't be itching yet, as it heals it might. Benedryl won't help though as histimines won't be the cause of the itching.

You can put a bit of neosporin on it if you want.

Cayleb would have been running with his buddy Mayce (black mix) today if we would have let him.... he still wants to lick it , but we just watched him and when I go to bed I will put the cone back on.... Thank you for all the great ideas... It will be hard keeping him quite for 14 days like the vet said... I think when Mayce got fixed we did good for about 5 or 6 days..

We just put the do-nut on at night and when we are gone. When Ruby got spayed and Dr. told us the sutures are the weakest at 72 hours and the strongest after that, u should be good to let him play in about 5 days. Nuetering isn't nearly as bad as a spay. It is important for a few days though and keep him out of water. Thought I was done with all that stuff now so what did I go and do bring home a 8 week old kitten....so now we get to do another ovh in about 2 months...I think I will keep her at work for about a week....lol

One thing I have used is roll on deoderant. Not on the incision just around it. Kept my female from licking.

Where did you get that tip from? I know dog people have a lot of tricks and tips that sound odd to most, but this is a new one on me.
