Treat Recipes

Does anyone make homemade treats for their corgis and have recipes to share? One year for a corgi picnic I did a "Corgi Cookie Cafe." Unfortunately the "fun" aspect escaped the attendees, but my guys certainly enjoyed the leftovers which included pizza for dogs, frosty paws and all sorts of cookies.

I'll start with some "Frosty Paws" recipes I've tried. (Not bad according to the human taster either.)

32 oz plain yogurt
1 cup of peanut butter
1/2 cup of honey
1 banana mashed
Mix together and freeze

Sounds delicious, do you freeze it in a pan and then cut it into pieces?

Here is one that my two really enjoy:

Corgimum's Cheese Cookies

1/3 cup margarine, softened
3 cups whole wheat floour
1/2 cup powdered skim milk
1/4 tsp garlic powder...........1 added 1 tsp
2/3 cup water, room temp.
1 egg, beaten
(the gated cheese, about 1 cup, I added as I kneaded the dough)

1. In a large bowl cream margarine and flour with a pastry cutter, set aside.
2. In a small bowl dissolve powdered skim milk & garlic powder in water & wisk in beaten egg.
3. Make a well in the flour mixture & gradually stir in egg mixture until well blended.
4. Knead dough on a floured surface about 3-4 min, until dough sticks together and is easy to
work with. (This is when I added the grated cheese.)
5. With a rolling pin, roll dough to between 1/4" and 1/2" thickness.
6. Cut with biscuit cutter (about 1"x3") & place on lightly greased baking sheet.
7. Bake 50 minutes at 325F
8. Cool on a rack until hard and store, at room temp, in a container with a loose-fitting lid.

Keeps 3 weeks or more. They also freeze well.

OHHH! My favorite kind of discussion - one that involves Corgis AND food! Well, food FOR Corgis, in this case!! I posted this on the Dogster site - Chloe "served" these treats at her birthday party! (My daughter and my nephews were totally grossed out, however! )

BEEF BROTH JIGGLERS:
1 can beef broth (low sodium is good)
2 packets Knox gelatin
Add water to beef broth to make a total 2 cups liquid. Pour 1/2 cup liquid into a bowl and sprinkle Knox gelatin on top. Let dissolve for 5 minute while heating remaining liquid to boiling. Stir boiling liquid into softened gelatin and stir until dissolved and mixed. Pour this into a 7x11 pan sprayed with Pam. Chill in refrigerator until set (about 3 hours). Cut into cubes or dog-bone shapes. (Humans can eat this, too!)

Thank you, but I think I'll stick to my fruit flavoured Jell-O.

And that I share with the dogs, so I will give your recipe a try, thanks for sharing it.

Debbie - could these be made in ice cube trays?

Healthy food treat recipes for Corgis must be greatly valued by our members.

Here is something I plucked out of the latest newsletter of the Dominion Welsh Corgi Club of New Zealand.

PEMBROKE STEW
One Pembroke's slightly chewed Sole of Charles favourite shoe.
Add some Acorns, digested once, and Oak tree sticks to give it crunch.
Bits of cat (food), hedgehog too - this is the start of Permbroke Stew.

For added zest, socks are best.
Sneak a piece of cheddar cheese, add carpet fibre, if you please.
Cook til tender or til rare
And then throw up behind a chair.

I made a 1/2 batch of the Frosty Paws this morning to fit into this container that I had. The handles are celery sticks, but the one with the plastic handle is for my husband.

And judging from the spoon licking (by everyone), they are a hit already!

We made the Frosty Paws for Ace over our 4th of July vacation at the beach. We used the ice cube trays and they worked great. They are a nice size treat. The celery idea is clever! We'll have to try that next time. Ace practically swallows the treat whole so we end up holding it until he licks it down some. How many treats should we give in a day?

The celery sticks were put in for two reasons, one in case I have a problem getting the treat out, and two, the gobble factor.

I'll hold the 'handle' and they can lick one taking turns. (they know, 'no bite')

Making ice cubed sized treats also had me thinking I would be tempted to give them more than one each a day. This way one to share will be all they can have at a time.
