warning of cocoa mulch - 07-19-2006, 07:17 AM

There is a warning to pet owners in "People Places and Plants Magazine" stating that there is possibitity of an animal getting sick or dying of ingesting cocoa bark mulch. The mulch contains theobromine the same ingedient that makes chocolate toxic to dogs. Knowing that Corgis will eat almost anything I thought it is best to bring this to the website.

Lots of neighbors have mulch in their yards around here - By it's name, I am
assuming this is the really dark colored mulch?

Thanks so much for that reminder Jane.

We are lucky that our much here is pretty much all cedar. But that can get into the skin as splinters and cause problems too.

Anyone up on noxious plants and pets links?

Cocoa Mulch is made by Hershey. They use the hulls of the cocoa beans that are left over from making their chocolate. You can buy it in Home Depot & other large stores. I've never seen it, but I imagine it is chocolate-colored. Also, it smells like chocolate.

There was a blurb about it in either Dog Fancy or AKC Family Dog last month (can't remember which). And it has been mentioned on dogster too.

Thank you for this useful information.
Although I do not own a Corgi, I'm thankful to have noticed
this thread with being the owner of two other dogs.
