I the only one. The Cardigan is really a different breed than the Pembroke so much so that both organizations are looking to slightly change their names to reflect the fact that they are really different breeds. The Cardigan is longer and bulkier than the Pembroke, more reserved with strangers, and they are known for doting on their owners. Plus they have a tail- a thick and bushy monster of a tail.

I met the nicest blue cardigan in a park. His name is Marley. This was a great day for me and Duchess as he was the nearest in size of all the dogs we encounter. They didn't do much but run together and they are both apt to stay near by so they got a lot of exercize. Unfortunately I have not met Sue and Marley again and wished I had got the number of the owner so I could ask her to join me on future trips to the park.

Whilst Pems and Cardis have differences they are also very similiar.
Don't forget that up til about the 1920s-1930s, Cardis and Pems were to a large degree intermingled. When first shown at a conformation breed show, they were under one banner only.

Having said that, while Pems and Cardis are cousins (kissing cousins?), one half of their ancestory is totally different. In New Zealand, the Pems only can be part of a group of dogs called spitz. Spitz-type dogs are largely found in the Scandinavian countries but are also found in Japan and elsewhere. They are distinguished by their curling tails and alert, upright ears. Cardis are more of a pastoral type akin to Collies.

Pems are incline to be more impetuous than Cardis. Cardis are more laid back and think more deeply berfore they act. Thus Pems are quicker off the mark and when confronted with a problem, a Pem is more likely to have a wee as a pacifying gesture whereas a Cardi will just shrug it off as yet another experience. It's no coincidence to me that the world record for the 60-pole (agility) weave by a Pem is faster than the best produced by a Cardi. Cardis are a little heavier, a little bigger but less nimble.

When my Pems met with any Cardis they sure knew just who they were associating with. Corgis absolutely know their own kind and go out of their way to mingle with them - of course Cardis included.

Hey Cardiguy, there are other Cardigan Corgi members in GoCorgi but they are a little on the quiet side. Perhaps you can stir them up. It's funny you should think that Cardis came under "other breeds" on this website.

cardiguy It is great to see this website heating up a little. I wish that others would put in their views and make this a more vibrant vehicle for those of us that visit often looking for fresh conversations. Keep it up.

The editors of Dog Fancy Magazine put out a popular dog series featuring entire magazines (128 pgs) devoted to a specific breed and volume #31 which came out in 2003 featured Welsh Corgis and the entire mag has articles and numerous glossy pictures on both breeds including articles discussing the differences between Cardigan and the Pembroke. Great pictures and great articles very well done. If you haven't seen it, I heartily recommend getting it.

Cardiguy, I met a woman that said her daughter had a Card and it shed a great deal. Is that the case with all Cardigans?

Jane Austen,

My guess is that the Cardi sheds the same as the Pembroke which means they shed a lot with 2 major sheds each yr.

Good guess. Pems and Cardis both have double coats and since both are approx the same size, if you were collecting loose hair to turn into human clothes or accessories, then you're going to get a similiar amount per annum from each breed.

I am new to this Forum and own two Pems. I would love to someday add a Cardi to our family.
