Jeni,
I hope that maybe this elderly person could work out for you. I personally think advertising your situation to a radio station is NOT a good idea - Would maybe encourage some "questionable" people to apply for the job Even though we have quite a few of "in home sitting services" in our area, I would have to have a couple of references to trust them to come into my home Good luck, I hope you find something that will work out for you. *~* I live in Nixa, Missouri...I wish that I live closer to you. I dog~sat for my neighbor when they went to Oklahoma for a week. Thay have a Cocker Spaniel. All I did was keep them in seperate rooms when I went to work (I only work for 5-6 hours). Midnight & Sunshine would be in my Master Bedroom with access to my Master Bathroom. Jake would be in my Laundry Room with a baby gate at the door. ** They would get to play before I went to work and after I returned. ** I also work with kids. I have been a Home Daycare/Pre~School Provider for almost 17 years. I have been doing it since I graduated from High School. I LOVE working with kids !! Now, I am just doing House Cleaning...but, I am looking for a job with medical benefits. Anyhoo...have you looked into Colleges ? They sometimes have bulletin boards where YOU can advertise a need. You could create a flyer stating what you need. or What about putting an ad in yoour local Newspaper ? Just ideas... (I would LOVE to watch Dudley. Midnight & Sunshine LOVE other dogs. I would do this with pleasure ! ) *~* NIkki

Oh, Nikki...how dare you live so far away
What an ideal situation it would be if you only lived about 5 or 6 hours north! I am very hesitant about posting any ad. I'm afraid of what type of person would reply back. I'm just going to hope for the elderly lady and hope that my school kids are well-behaved and I won't ever have to give up a lunch

*~* I hope everything works out for you. My two children are a GREAT help to me when I am at work. When school was in session...my children would be responsible to come home and feed Midnight & Sunshine after school was out & also walk them. My son would usually walk Midnight & Sunshine and my daughter would feed them. They were a team....and I was/am extremely proud of my kids ! Jeni...wanna borrow...MY KIDS ?? lol (kidding) ( Seriously...I would watch Dudley IF we lived closer to eachother ) *~* Nikki

Jeni,
He'll be fine and as you said, you aren't the only one who works and has a puppy. "Daycare" and/or "in home care" for dogs/puppies is a recently new phenomenon - generations of dogs and people survived before this became the "in thing" to do. Mostly Dudley is going to sleep. As your work schedule becomes more the normal routine, his system will adjust to the new time frame and accidents will become more infrequent. As to what to leave playing for him - many use classical music, others oldie stations, some leave Animal Planet playing for them, and I have one friend who leaves HGTV and/or the Do It Yourself network on for her corgis. We'll cross our fingers that your new neighbor might work out (could be therapeutic for her as well) and that your new students are wonderful. Debbie |

Jeni,
I worked for years too far away to run home. Hubby works shift so he is home some days sleeping or just off days but there were times we left Emma alone... either in her pen or on the back deck (it's fenced in). She did fine. Like Glencorgi Deb says - they mostly sleep or chew on their bones. I think I heard somewhere that dogs don't have a sence of time so 1 hour or 8 feels about the same to them. As Dudley gets older his bladder will be able to last longer. But emotionally I dont think he will suffer nearly as much as you will.

Well, apparently my worries were for naught. I was able to come home the first few days, but the past two have not been able too, and I come home to a very happy and excited puppy who has had ZERO accidents. I was a little concerned at first because when I would come home from work his chin and neck would be soaked from panting; I guess this was just part of his nervousness because that is no longer an issue. I leave ESPN on for him, give him some toys, a big bowl of water and some food (which he never eats). Just thought I would let you all know about Dudley's success!

I am glad that all worked out for you and Dudley. When ever we have to leave the house we leave the Animal Planet on for the three dogs that are allowed to be free in the house and the Animal Planet on in the room where the wolf puppy is crated. I have been told that Maxi will go to the door out 10 minutes before I arrive home and sit looking at the door, he is always at the door when I come home. Even if he is on the back porch he goes to the sliding glass door to be let in the house so he can sit by the garage to house door. I can sometimes tell that he has been sleeping because the hair on his head and face is messed up and the cover on the couch is warm and in disarray. I love to see how excited he is to see me when I get home.

Generally, dogs can see movement one kilometre away at ground level. So with hearing, which is infinitely more acute than their eyesight, they can pick up sounds many kilometres away. If someone they know and care about is approaching on foot or a vehicle they are aware of is also approaching, the dog can alert to the event long before the actual arrival of the person or car.
And of course, a dogs greatest attribute for recognisation is their smelling ability. Last edited by Michael Romanos; 08-19-2006 at 08:50 AM. |
