I know with Cody, he sometimes gives "love bites" as we call them - "nibbles" as you call them - I still say OUCH when he does this for I do not want him doing this to me or small children. I have come in contact with other dogs that give "love bites" also. My sister in laws dog gives "nibbles" and the neighborhood kids always tell her that they were bitten - so as we see, children see this differently.

As for the door issue, which we also have - door bell rings and Cody barks and
sprints for the door so it makes it hard to open. My instructor suggested this, but she said "IT WILL TAKE WORK AND REPETITION- She said to place a mat or cat bed or some comfy thing in the family room, but far enough away from the front door and every day, I should practice with Cody and tell him to "go to his mat" and get him to stay there for small increments each time, building up to two minutes on his mat.

Then, once he complies with that, I should get someone in my family or neighbor friend to help practice with ringing the doorbell, and as Cody attempts to "greet the visitors", I should direct him to "go to his mat" and STAY - this being his special place to wait until visitors come in. She did ask me "how much are you willing to work on this?" which I said "a lot" - she did say it will take time and to not expect miracles at his young age of 9 months.

I am going to try her suggestion and see how it goes. Thought I would pass this on. I am willing to try any suggestion that seems like it will work.

Linda

Midnight & Sunshine seem to like to "share" the water bowl...and Midnight LOVES to try...try...to get sister Sunshine to "share" the food in her bowl.
Sunshine is a pretty submissive sister...she allows Midnight to get some extra kibble...once in awhile ! It is Mama Nikki....who tells Midnight, "Not yours".

I think that one mat will be fine. I think I will just get a larger pet bed...one that will coordinate with my Family Room decor.

Barbara,

I love the gate - and your yard is so beautiful

As for the mat, it can really be anything that our Corgis will think is their own; of course, we want it to blend in with our decor and not have it be some old towel Just some fleece pad will do - I have some unused cat baskets and I know Cody will like one of those, so that is what I am going to use.

I, too, LOVE THOSE BABY GATES!!! We have three movable baby gates in our small house that we shift around depending on where we need to corral Chloe at any given time. Since they don't alway 'fit' the doorways they sometimes CRASH on the wood floors - thus Chloe has a great deal of "respect" for the gates! We have tried to give Chloe special blankies and mats, but she still chews them. It is quite frustrating - I assumed by now (16 months old) she would be over that chewing stage. Plus it is scary since I worry about her consuming stings and fabric hunks...I made her a fleece 'bed' but she ate a hole in it and pulled out the stuffing... so now she sleeps on just a plain, empty, cotton pillowcase.
Anyway, I really like the suggestions for preventing 'door rushing' as Chloe comes unglued when we have guests - barking and rump wagging - general carrying on until she is adequately acknowledged. I realized not everyone appreciates this enthusiastic behaviour and we need to do 'something' about it. Chloe does pretty well with our "stay" exercises so I will work more on that approach!
And, Barbara, I will add my compliments on your beautiful front porch! What a lovely way to incorporate style and 'safety'!

Margo

See barbara, you are way ahead of all of us already with the "place thing". I
am working on it.

The loud ouch works with Sassy. She will lay her ears back and try to snuggle up to you as if to say Oops I got carried away, but she has never really biten hard enough to bleed and usually only bites a little harder if you are playing a rough and tumble game with her. She never has even attempted to bite for real.

Cats are drawn to anything fuzzy as well as to quilts - I think this is HIS spot
now.
