Pee Problems!
Hi all -
Rhys is now 10 months old and he's been housetrained. I make sure I take him out at regular intervals because he is still not good at letting me know that he needs to go potty! I have been trying to let him sleep out of his crate (in the bedroom only) at night, but he pees before it is time to get up! I know he can hold it until it's time to wake up. Is any of this due to the fact that he is a boy? I don't know...I didn't have this problem with my female Lab. Interestingly, he ALWAYS lets me know when he needs to poop...it is usually preceded by frantic FRAPping, followed by a jump on the front door. No subtlety there.

Since he is peeing outside the crate during the night time, I would put him back in the crate - I haven't let Cody sleep outside his crate yet during the night - he will be 9 months old on Sept 12th - I am thinking it is going to be awhile before I am willing to try this.
I don't know if this is a male thing, and honestly, Cody does not stand at the door when he needs to go pee either. but he will sort of get this anxious behavior or sniff around and that is my cue that it is potty time - but I do let him out every 3 to 4 hours anyway. I wish he would just sit by the door like you said and I don't know if that will ever happen. My female Pem used to sit by the door when she needed to go. I just think that maybe they are still too young to be let out of their crate during the night time, and I figure if Cody doesn't mind being in there, then why ruin a good thing. Do you currently have his crate in your bedroom? and if not, could you place it next to your bed for a couple of nights with the door closed and then try it with the door open and see if he would still stay in there until you get up; gradually getting him to stay in his own bed - I really don't know. Do you have any other pets that may be distracting him during the night? In my case, my 3 cats, who often are up during the night, would be too much of a temptation for Cody and he would want to get up to check out what they are doing - that is also why he is in his crate. I would love to hear others suggestions in solving this. Linda Last edited by corgimom; 08-03-2006 at 08:49 AM. |

Pee Problems!
Dillon is just over a year, he still sleeps in his crate at night. We taught him to ring a bell that is hanging from the door when he has to go out, now when he rings, we let him out. He gets out for the last time at night at 10pm and then he is let out at 6am. We have kept this schedule from the time he came home with us. He learned to ring the bell within 2 weeks of coming home to us. I was told that boys are a little harder to housebreak than girls.

Ours go out at 11pm and then at 6.30am. I have found that both of our male corgis did take a little longer to train than our female.

*~* They are 10 months old now...and their bladders are better controlled...
but, I still take them OUTSIDE when I have them INSIDE the house for more than 3 hours. Neither Midnight nor Sunshine bark or make any audio attempt to, "tell me" that they need to, "go potty". I just make sure that I take them outside...JUST IN CASE...if they need "relief"...so to speak ! ** I remove any access to WATER around 7PM. They usually pass out around 9 or 10PM...and I want to make sure that they do not have a full bladder. There have been NO accidents for about 4 months now. After they BOTH were spayed...there were some accidents ! But, just like spillled milk...accidents happen ! IF...I freak out everytime there are few & far between "accidents"...then, WHAT will I be teaching my Canine Daughters ? I will TEACH THEM that I freak out everytime there are few & far between "accidents" !!~~~Shame on ME...not on them !!~~~ IMO (in my opinion...) ** I DO NOT "freak out" much ** *~* Nikki

I am trying to remember when Tucker started sleeping out of his crate. I think it may have been around 10 months. And no potty accidents then. He usually sleeps on the bed w/ me but goes thru phases when he sleeps in his snuggle nest bed for about a week, then back on the bed.
Lulu is 3 months old and still sleeps in her crate. I know she can hold her pee for a long time. I leave for work and she is home in an x pen w/ piddle pad from 8 am to almost 6 pm. And for 2 weeks now, she has never pottied in her pen and never used the piddle pad. I am amazed. I started Tucker out that way and he did occasionally use the pee pad. I am thinking of giving the piddle pad another week then stopping that. Neither have ever pottied in their crate.

Sorry I've been neglecting my own thread...I've been a bit busy here lately!
Rhys usually sleeps about 8-9 hours a night. I try to be in bed by 2 a.m. and get up around 10 a.m. or 11. (I am a graduate student - we keep different hours than the 9-5 crowd ). He always goes out 1 or 2 times before bed and always goes out right after I get up. He is fine when he is in his crate (which is right next to my own bed), but if he is loose - he will pee in the early morning. Maybe he is not tired enough at night - should I prevent him from napping so much? |
