Rupert's Getting A Sister - 08-13-2006, 12:44 PM

Well, much to my delight, Mr. Rupert behaved like a gentleman yesterday when he met his potential new sister. We first got him put in his place by having a couple of the adult females meet him in the yard, then they went in and the breeder brought out the pup and her Mom. Rupe was very good, he was curious but a little intimidated by all of the ladies - which is what he needs! He gave her a couple of short barks and she walked away and then turned and gave him the exact same sounding barks right back. As if to say, don't tell me what to do Mister!
We are going to call her Jemma, she will be 7 months old this coming week and we will pick her up next Saturday morning. She was an absolute sweetie - mine aren't lickers and she pretty much gave me a bath and nibbled one of my ears down a size or two. She's full of beans and chased butterflies and grasshoppers across the yard most of the time. She sat in my lap and came when I called her. She is at that funny gangly stage where she is really long and thin and looks like one of those slinky dog toys.
We are taking her on a trial, the breeder prefers this, so that if she and Rupe don't bond, she'll go back and I'll get my money back. I think she'll be fine and it was easy to tell that Rupert wanted to romp with her but wasn't too sure. It will be a whole different ball game next week when she comes to his territory. Patience and monitoring them while together should help this work.

Deb

Congratulations!!!!

I hope it all works out. She looks beautiful and hopefully will bring back some spark in Ruperts life and yours. May I ask, why you have to wait until next Saturday to get her?

I don't have to wait. Yesterday we went to see if she could be the one for us and if we would pass muster with the breeder. I didn't prepare for her arrival and I am back to work tomorrow so it wouldn't have been a good plan to bring her home yesterday. Now I know about her and what she's used to, we can prepare my den as a "puppy" nursery, get her food, dig out the crate and just be ready for her. I am also off next Monday so it will give me 3 days with them.

Good planning Deb,

Better to wait and get prepared... I can't wait to hear how this all goes for you.

Jemma seems like a very nice and most suitable companion for you and Rupert. She probably will take over from Rupert as the Corgi in charge and it certainly seems like she will be very trainable and alert and alive. I hope she will like swimming too.

Rupert will sense (know) all this (re the takeover) and may compare Jemma with his missing 'sister' and so I wouldn't jump to any conclusions if he doesn't hit it off with the pup within the first week.

Deb, Congratulations!

She looks like a lovely girl, I hope that Rupert accepts her easily, and that the three of you will be very happy. It's wise of you to prepare for Jemma's arrival into your pack, physically and mentally.

And the anticipation is so exciting! You will be sharing lots of pictures I hope!

Deb!

I am so happy for you and Rupes! I truly hope Jemma is the one! I bet Riley was watching out for you on your visit. Jemma is a beauty but of course, can't get past just how handsome Mr. Rupert is!!!!! A lovely family!

Thanks everyone - I think she'll develop into a lovely looking little girl. her Mom and Dad are very attractive, and even if not, her temperment is wonderful. All of the other breeders I spoke to about this one had said her dogs were very well known for their good natures. It's going to be a crazy few weeks - but fun!
