Are acorns bad for dogs? - 08-18-2006, 01:28 PM

We have a very large deck that is overlooked by trees and acorns are constantly accumulating on the deck. Well the deck happens to be one of Ruby's favorite places and I have found broken acorns in the house and have caught Ruby many times with an acorn in her mouth. I don't know exactly what she does with them in her mouth other than deposit parts of them sometimes in the house. I am afraid she may be eating some of the acorn and am thinking of banning her from the deck. Right now the acorns are falling fast and by the time I clean them off the deck there are more of them as we have a large deck. Are acorns a problem?

Cardiguy,

We used to have a real acorn problem at our old house, but fortunately the dogs rarely messed with them. I remember one Cardi breeder being alarmed by them, but couldn't remember why. These website answered the question.
http://www.dogpatch.org/doginfo/plants.html
http://www.inch.com/~dogs/safety.html
http://petfinder.com/journalindex.cg...th/1.34.36.txt

However, IF you happen to have a pot belly pig (which another CWC breeder did) they are wonderful!

Soooo, sounds like you're going to have a busy fall keeping the deck clear for Ruby.

Debbie

Thanks Glencorgi, looks like the petfinder site says acorns can cause intestinal upset, blockage or kidney failure so I will try to control Ruby around acorns.
