Before we got Chloe, the breeder sent me a photo of her litter as newborns...I looked at the photo several times before I NOTICED that all the pups had tails!
Frankly, I HAD NO IDEA that Pems CAME with TAILS!!...and that they were docked!! That's how much of a novice I was!! Yes - I, too, am anxious to see photos of your little darlings! I need to mention also that I am relieved that the pups arrived safely and that everyone is doing well!! |

And look! Their ears are even up!
![]() This is something of an inside breeder's joke - all puppies at that age have their ears up. Public Broadcasting System (PBS) had a show they've run a couple of times on dogs. Who domesticated whom was one segment of it. Another segment had to do with how puppies grow into adult from the phenotype perspective. At birth ALL puppies look pretty much idenitcal regardless of breed or being Heinz 57's and their ears are up. Now if this is a sign of nervousness as in the question raised (I missed that post ), then the world would be filled with nervous dogs I suppose. (See the question below raised by corgimom.)On the show they took two diverse breeds in size and looks, like a Great Dane and a Chihuahua for example; placed them side by side with a head shot (at which point the looked the same) and then time lasped/computer generated the changes as they aged. It was interesting. Hopefully Eric will continue to provide pictures of his litter and we'll be able to watch them grow on. At <http://www.miragecardigans.com> there are two litters of Cardigan puppies that you can see the changes as they are growing on. (Family connection here, my sister bred the sire (Rio) of the older litter I think it is.) Debbie Last edited by glencorgi; 08-23-2006 at 08:22 AM. Reason: add more information |

Deb(Glencorgi)
I know I read somewhere where someone had commented that when a pups ears are up at that age, it means they are "nervous" That seems silly to me and I can't recall who said that on this forum. Is that true with young pups in anyway? - what would make them nervous? Horsehauler... Not saying anything against your pups because I have seen quite a few young pups with their ears up early and wasn't sure if there was any truth to what I had read as to the reasoning behind it. They are really cute puppies. My question is (please pardon me for I don't have the knowledge) is how do breeders dock their tails? I thought initially that corgis were born with their short tails. I realized later they have to be docked after they are born within a few days.
To me, "docking" sounds like cutting or seems painful. Please explain. |

You have 2 choices to dock them. You take them to the vet and I think they cut them off to a certain joint of the tail bone. And the second option is to use a rubber band. What the rubber band does is, it cuts of the circulation of the tail and the tail eventually falls off. Thats what it says in my corgi book . Which it does look like it would hurt but to me, I think they look better without tails. But if im wrong, please correct me!
