Smile *~* weight..I was WRONG !

*~* I took Midnight & Sunshine to Pet Warehouse today.

I used their pet scale.

Midnight weighs 25.2 pounds

Sunshine weighs 21.4 pounds

** When I took them to Petsmart a couple of weeks ago...
Midnight weighed 19 (something) pounds & Sunshine was 17 (something) pounds.

They kept on moving at Petsmart and the scale was reading all over the place. I am not sure that it was even working corectly.

Today, I had a guy help me keep the girls still.

Sorry....I was WRONG about their weight before.

That's okay Nikki,

I have had that happen with Cody even at the vets...he may wiggle a bit too
much and then it doesn't register correctly. See, you are feeding them better than you thought.

*~* I wanted to be SURE of their weight.

Pet Warehouse has better Customer Service...in my opinion...and I felt that I would get a more accurate weight reading there.

I didn't know Petsmart had scales that the public could use. I will have to check that out. Chip, I think, has lost a little weight since he has been on the adult dog food (not eating as much) but he looks good to me. Glad to hear about your girls weight.

I usually weigh mine here at home, I weigh then hold them and subtract. It's not 100 % accurate but I am usually very close within a couple oz.

Darci is at 26 lbs
Egan was at 16.9 lbs

A lot of scales can't be trusted to be accurate. I would be wary of the scales in stores. Petsmart might be playing it a bit smart - having weight scales for people and dogs that might register -deliberately or orherwise - on the lower end so that people might buy more or give more, food to their dogs. The vets should have the most accurate scales for dogs.

My hubby just weighed Ace on our scale here at home. We do the same as Cindy, just subtract from our weight. Ace weighed in at 30 pounds tonight!!! And I was worried about him not eating.... HA!

We didn't know that Petsmart had public scales either. But Michael's right, the vet would be the most accurate.

Nikki,

maybe PetsMart has scales to help people when they are picking out food.
Certain brands of food are geared towards different sizes of dogs and even lists the weight on the front package. If people are bringing their dogs into the store, then it may be to their benefit rather than guessing and buying the wrong food.

Jim & Bethany,

How old is Ace now?

*~* Banfield VET clinic is inside Petsmart in Springfield. There is a scale there.

Do you have a Pet Warehouse where you live ?

The Pet Warehouse that I went to...has a scale right when you walk inside the store !

FREE...to use.

Linda - Ace is six and one half months old. He weighs too much??? He's not chunky but solid!(a real genuine linebacker!) I can feel his ribs and he is pretty active...

If I am correct Cardigans tend to be a little larger than Pems so Ace could be right on track for his weight. Looking at his pictures his weight doesn't seem to be a problem. Being able to feel his ribs easily is a good indication that he is doing just fine. By the way, he is a real cutie!

Jim & Bethany,

I know I have read and been told that Cardis are bigger and Ace looks fine to me, but I am not there to actually look at him .What has the vet said?

I was looking at his pictures in the members gallery and he looks fine there; I think some of those were from June, so does it seem since then he has gained a lot? He is very cute by the way.

Cody is about 9 1/2 months and weighs 26 pounds Everyone comments to me that he is longer and bigger than my last Pem, but she was a female. I think Cody is a good weight for his structure - he gets about a cup of his food a day, but also some fruit or veggies at times, along with yogurt and cottage cheese, but in small amounts. Depending on what he gets, I sometimes adjust his meal at supper time.

Cardigans are generally larger than Pembrokes and will outpace Pems in weight. Ace is a pretty big guy, lots of bone and large frame it appears, I think he looks good. Vets, may or may not be good on the weight issue, another option one can use IF available, is ask your breeder.

The public scales at PetSmart as Nikki mentioned are a part of their instore Banfield Veterinary Clinics - so you are using a vet's scale. My vet has a set of scales in the lobby and I'll often drop by and do a weigh in on a foster I'm monitoring the weight on.

My Pem Taylor's most perfect show weight would be 33 pounds. But he's down to 28- 29 (12.9kg) on account of his agility.

Thanks for the positive feedback. We knew that cardis weighed more than pems but we weren't sure about his weight for his age. Good to know he's not a fatty! He does have a large bone structure and is very solid! Hopefully he won't get much bigger. When can we expect Ace to be done growing?
