Is your corgi jealous? - 09-06-2006, 03:38 PM

Chip likes me to get on the floor with him at night and play. He starts it with running around with a toy in his mouth and I toss it (if I can get it away from him) or chase him around. Anyway, when I am sitting on the floor, he will run up on my lap and I cuddle him, take the toy away from him and throw it again or we play hide and go seek around and around the house. Now Maybelle comes along and gets into the mix. She will either run after the toy I have thrown, crawl up on my lap for attention or chase Chip and want to roughhouse. Well Chip will put up with this for about 2 minutes and then he growls at her and chases her away and bites her legs etc. I really think he means business and is not playing - he wants her to leave us alone. So I have to stop playing with Chip so they will quit scrapping. I can't play with the two of them together because the same thing happens. I just wondered if this jealousy was a corgi trait or if anyone else has similiar problems.

Being possessive - which is a form of jealousy - is a Corgi trait. I would prevent my youngest son making a fuss of another male dog with Taylor hovering around. And I play it cool for a start with which dogs I make a fuss of just in case it might upset Taylor. And this is a Corgi who is almost always very happy to meet and greet any other dog.

Taylor does not like me or my wife making a fuss of Nathan and leaving him out of the equation.

In my family, if I give someone a hug, be it hubby or kids, Cody comes running and stands by us and starts barking. For whatever reason, he feels he must bark. Per our puppy instructor, she said to ignore him, which we do.

Now, if I give another dog attention while we are out walking, he is fine with that. He still gets a bit jealous when I give attention to one of the cats, but not as much as he used to a few months ago.

I am so glad to hear that she is doing much better - I have been wondering about her and I apologize for not asking. It's all the good vibes, corgi kisses and prayers. Give her a big hug from Chip and me.

Such wonderful news that she is regaining her spunk and claiming her territory again.

Ace gets jealous when I spend time with my cat Peiper. He'll try to get my attention by jumping on me. Also, when my hubby and I sit down to eat and don't pay Ace any attention, he'll go over to the door and ring the bell to go out. Now we just ignore the bell until we're done eating. The cutest thing is my hubby and I will cuddle and giggle together (on purpose). This drives Ace crazy! He just has to be involved and will bark and jump up to get in the middle of us!

Smile *~* Sunshine used to act jealous... - 09-06-2006, 07:52 PM

*~* Sunshine has shown some jealousy traits before. She has pretty much learned that I will ignore her or make her, "sit" when she acts that way.

There were times when she would come running over to me and butt her little

Corgi toush

in the middle of me interacting with Midnight !

Now, I truly believe that she has LEARNED that when I am interacting with Midnight FIRST...that Midnight is, "first"...and she will get her pets..next ! I am persistant...I DO NOT give in.

Midnight does not exhibit this jealous behavior toward Sunshine in any way...and at any time.

However, on the flip side of the "cookie"...Sunshine is also EXTREMELY submissive ! She has always allowed Midnight to try and steal her food from her food dish...she has allowed Midnight to steal the bone that she was chewing FIRST...she allows Midnight to attack her and instigate the frapping with her...she even lets Midnight clean her ears !!!

My girls are different...but, so individually LOVED !!

** I know that they feel my love for them...there is no need for jealousy ! **

" A Pembroke Corgi" : "When we are born...our ears are down...our tails are docked & we wear no frown. As we mature...the ears come up...our personality develops...no more a pup. When we chew our bone...the legs come out...and the "Flying Squirrel" lies alone. A corgi is a wonderful breed...much LOVE from owner to Canine...is received."

Lady is pretty jealous herself. She doesn't like for us to pay attention to the cats when she is around. She'll come up and make them leave. Never in a mean way, but she'll get in their face until they've had enough. Also when I am sitting with my girlfriend, she'll kinda bite her a little bit. She won't bite on me, but she'll bite her hand. Not hard or course.

Do birds fly? Is New York a big city? Are corgis jealous-of course. Ruby can't handle it if I hug my wife and she immediately comes over to be part of the action. We have an African Grey parrot who makes Ruby very jealous if we pay attention to the bird. I find it a very endearing trait.

Jealousy - 09-08-2006, 01:46 PM

This has been quite informative. My Shelly (10 year old Cardigan, I adopted her about 6 monthe ago) gets very jealous - sometimes has a barking fit if one of the cats is in my lap, or if another dog tries to get near me. This happens most after I've shown her attention. It's sort of funny, but can be too much at times. I'd prefer to have one happy family, but not with her view of every other creature being a rival.

I suppose Corgis can go either way - get more possessive or less possessive as they grow older. Taylor doesn't mind me giving other dogs treats when up to several months ago it might have upset him.
