Corgi Magazine
For those of you who know me, you know that I am the co-editor of the PWCCA Newsletter Magazine. I have been involved in Corgi club newsletters for many years and this has always been a burning question for me: would Corgi pet owners be interested in a "Corgis only" newsletter/magazine that might have an occasional article about showing or organized performance events, but for the most part, is just fun and educational and pet focused? It's really neat that we can share so much now via venues such as this website, but I was wondering if folks might still be interested in something like this, and if so, exactly what sorts of things would be in their "wish list" for such a publication. Dog club newsletters are sort of self-limiting in their audience, I will be the first to admit that.

I would certainly be interested in subscribing.
Would like to see articles on "what to look for when purchasing a puppy" Tips on bonding with the new puppy Crate training. Finding reputable breeders and what to look for. ailments that afflict older Corgis and how to care for our senior Corgis/maybe some info on carts or strollers for senior Corgis who need them. Maybe could throw in some "tricks to teach your pup" for fun The Corgi appetite and preventing obesity - articles on Appropriate food for pups and seniors regarding protein percentages and fat percentages, etc. getting started with Agility - when is a good time How about a happy ending rescue story each quarter about a dog that was adopted into a good home. Would love to hear that. and I will also add...finding the right puppy trainer, what to look for, and what to avoid. I could go, but these are some things Last edited by corgimom; 09-08-2006 at 02:48 PM. |

I am not sure what CorgiPrincess had intended though, as she is only 14 years old.
She was going to be taking a journalism class this summer and this was one of her assignments - she was also looking for others to write stories and I am not sure who she would be in contact with for writing her own articles. Last edited by corgimom; 09-08-2006 at 01:31 PM. |

What to look for in obedience and training classes would be good. How much exercise should a corgi have. Stories of rescued corgis and the endings, an article on how people can get involved in rescue, transporting rescues, etc. Problem solving - such as chewing, barking, etc. I can think of lots more. I love to read about corgis.

I would also be very interested in subscribing to such a magazine/newsletter.
When we first got Trevor and I sent in his papers, I received an invitiation to subscribe to a Corgi-specific newsletter. As it was highly geared towards "show dogs", I was not interested, so I didn't subsscribe (sorry if this was your newsletter!) Anyway, as everyone else has already stated, I would be most interested in reading about health issues, nutrition, exercise, agility training and competion (how to get started), history and general articles of interest, relating to our four-legged family members! -Debi |

I would definitely be interested in such a magazine. My brain is too fried right now to add much to the list of articles. I do currently get the PWCCA newsletter... love seeing all the corgi pictures even if they are completely out of my league to ever own! There was a couple of articles in the last one that I enjoyed and would also be appropriate in the type of magazine you are asking about (can't remember specifics but ones that I remember off the top of my head was one about a corgi that excelled in herding... and another story of a corgi that hurt it's back in agility and it's long road to recovery). I think the idea of stories of rescues and where they are today would also be a terrific idea. Maybe a corgi photo contest each addition... photo's sent in from subscribers? (Okay, I admit.. my name is Cheryl and I am addicted to corgi pictures *sigh*) Anyhow... I might have to pry the money from my hubby's fingers given our financial situation right now but we would figure out a way to get it if there was such a magazine!

Off thread - Cheryl (I am sorry) but I had to pause on the corgi who hurt his back in agility? I am thinking about putting Chip in agility but I will not if the risk is to great.
We all have Champion Show Dogs - everytime someone comments on our pups we are showing off the breed and how excited they are and boy do they perform for these people. I was thinking today (slow day at work) that I wouldn't trade my Chip for the best corgi show dog in the world as I am sure nobody else would either.

Oh boy.. I would try to dig up the article for you but it's packed away in a box somewhere awaiting our future move if we ever sell this house! I wouldn't worry too much though... if I remember correctly (and Brynlea is welcome to correct me here) it was kinda an oddish injury. I can't even recall what had happened now... but it wasn't something that made me rethink giving agility a try with Checkers one day if I can afford it. Maybe Brynlea can give you a better "Reader's Digest" version of the article.
I agree there isn't another dog anywhere of any breed that would make me give up Checkers.... but that doesn't stop me from drooling and wishing I had all those pretty show corgis to play with him! |

I looked for the magazine that was referenced but it looked like the cost was $61 a year for 4 issues. I may have looked in the wrong area though. I do subscribe to Dog Fancy and that is neat. I always look for a glimpse of corgis though.

Thanks!
First of all, thanks to all of you who have posted ideas/wants for a Corgi newsletter, it has given me some good food for thought!
Secondly, don't laugh, but it's rare that I get a chance to read all the way through the PWCCA newsletter AND enjoy/comprehend the articles because I spend so much time proofreading it! When you are looking for dotted i's and crossed t's, it darned well takes all the fun out of reading it! So I will have to go back and READ that article on the agility dog who becomes injured. Lastly, I don't even know what the subscription fee is for the PWCCA newsletter for nonmembers, believe it or not there is a whole business side to the magazine that I have little or nothing to do with. I suspect the $61 could be right, it is very expensive, mostly because of the printing and mailing costs for such a small number of issues published. For this reason, if I can get a Corgi newsletter especially geared to pet owners rolling, I would have to be creative in the format so that the cost would be low, yet contents high quality. I am thinking somewhere around $20-$25 a year per subscription, does that sound alot more reasonable? |

That does sound alot more reasonable to me. I think it is a great idea and should be successful.
