I have a Welsh Corgi magazine that would easily cover up to 200 pages of an average sized book. I am willing to type up important parts of the article in order to aid anyones' need to take care of their Corgi.

Is this the one from Dog Fancy's Popular Breeds series?

I have the same magazine and it is an excellent source of information and it covers both Pembroke and Cardigan and makes many comparisons. Definitely recommended reading. Plus it has numerous high quality pictures.

Yes, it has some nice photos. A couple of the dogs in there are mine though so I guess I have a biased opinion! It is a good basic care document but I don't think it fits the same "niche" as what we have been discussing.

Page 42, bottom photo. Might be others but those I know for sure. Funny thing is, I did a photo shoot with that photographer (Ms. Uridel) over 10 years ago. We thought the photo were going to be used in a regular Dog Fancy issue later that year, but I kept watching and never saw them. Imagine my surprise when 10 years later, I buy this magazine and there they are! The sable on the left is Ch. Brynlea Reason To Believe, "Zelda", who also is pictured with me on the home page of my website. At the time of the photo she was about 4 months old.

Now that's a loaded question?! I co-own many dogs who do not live with me, but I am still involved in their lives........but I won't count them. I also have one dog living out in WA with a handler (my incredible "Bea") and 2 girls who are not staying with me at the moment because I have puppies right now (there's only so much me to go around!). So in my house, right at this very moment, I have 7 (not including babies) - ranging in age from 1 year to 14 years and representing 5 generations.

I don't think it was meant to be a loaded question. I admit to being a little curious as well because most of us have no clue what it takes to show... or how many dogs people own that do show. I think it is great that you have enough love and interest to share with so many corgis, and I'm sure they are a very happy bunch. I think we'd all love to see pictures if you can post them.

I was joking, people ask me all the time how many dogs I have - and then when I don't answer right away, they must think I am nuts! But as you see, there really is no easy answer! If it's not too much trouble, anyone who wants to see my dogs can go to my website, and there is also a link to my puppy photo albums so you can get a "puppy fix" whenever you like. www.siteskins.net/brynleacorgis/ Realize not everyone who shows has as many dogs as I do, many have 2 or 3 at most.....4 of the dogs I have right now are retirees, so they aren't being shown or bred, they are just couch potatoes. I have to keep a few younger dogs to maintain my breeding program, as it took me many years to develop a "line" and I would like to keep it going as long as everybody is healthy and happy.

Thanks for sharing your web site, I loved looking at it. Very nicely done

Brenda,

Would you be willing to give your thoughts on what you feel is best to feed Corgis and approx how much from the 6 to 12 month old stage?

What are your thoughts on the Raw food diets? My vet is not keen on this idea due to E-coli and salmonella risks, but what are your thoughts?

You could post this is the "Puppy Weight" thread that is on here.

I will post here but feel free to carry this over for further discussion on one of the other forums.

First of all, there is no magical definitive diet or amount of diet for any dog, Corgi or otherwise. Each dog is different, just like each human is different.

There are good commercial foods and plenty of BAD ones. We have more choices now than ever, but with choices comes confusion. Just because something costs alot doesn't mean it's better. Read the ingredients. Corn at the top of the list is not good, that's just a filler. The rest you will have to be the judge, there are plenty of great articles out there on how to decipher the label and what makes a good food. I know a few breeders who feed either all raw, or a mixture of raw and commercial. I don't see that their dogs are any healthier than mine and many times the coats on raw diet do not look good, which leads me to believe it is awfully hard to get things "just right" when you are concocting it yourself.

I don't want to sound like a commercial, but I have fed Purina Pro Plan since it's inception back in the early 80's. I have tried many foods, the food companies are always bombarding us breeders with "perks" not only because of the number of dogs we feed, but because we will recommend to puppy buyers and peers. Purina wouldn't have to offer me a thing, I think that much of their diets. There are different formulas and in the course of a dog's lifetime, I will feed several different ones, depending on the dog.

As far as amount, never EVER go by what is printed on the bag! A Corgi puppy between 6 and 12 months I would put on adult formula and give between 1 1/2 and 2 cups depending on size and activity. At one year the amount should be decreased. An adult corgi rarely should get more than 1 cup of food per day. hat being said, don't just slap the same amount of food in the bowl no matter what - be in tune to your dog. If they are having an overly active day, give them a few bits more. If the weather is crappy and they are just laying around all day, give them less. If they got extra treats yesterday, give them less food today........you get the picture. I can't tell you how many times I have seen totally obese corgis whose owners will say "but I only fed him one cup per day!" - yep, they did, day in and day out, while the dog never got a lick of exercise, and the contents of the treat jar didn't count!

It wasn't meant as a loaded question. I was just curious too. I am glad to know that you keep your retirees and other dogs in the house. I think some of us wonder what a corgi's life is like that are show dogs. You must miss your little ones that are away. Also, if I may ask, what does it mean to co-own a dog?

It means I share ownership with someone else. Sometimes the dog will live it's entire life with the co-owner, sometimes part time with me. Since I am also listed as one of the owners on the dog's AKC registration certificate, the dog cannot be sold, used for breeding, etc. without my consent and agreement. This way I keep tabs on any dogs who leave my house not on spay or neuter agreements (dogs shown in conformation events cannot be altered) and I make sure they do not end up in the hands of less than reputable owners or breeders. I have not always done this, it took learning a lesson the hard way, unfortunately.
