Corgis and Cats
I have 5 cats and my 2 Corgis Rupert and Jemma, and I'm curious about others who have a mixed family of felines and canines. My cats are all pretty laid back about the dogs. I have a 3 legged cat, Triston, who is more trouble than all of them put together and he doesn't take guff from any dog. Our cat Tucker I got for Rupert, and the two of them are best buddies. Tuck has no fear of any dog and absolutely adores them and is thrilled with Jemma. The dogs have been wonderful with the cats and are very gentle and will sit for a bath or an ear cleaning. They will occassionally chase the cats but the cats sense that they are just playing and put up with it. I love having the whole gang.
I know Cody has a cat brother Ernie and I have read others who mention their cats - I'd like to hear from others here who have similar families. Here is Tucker making Jemma feeling at home.

I have 7 cats with Lady in our home. Lady does real well with them. She chases the ones who don't like to be chased and she leaves the cats be who don't care she is around. I have found that Lady does like to do some cat things. Like lay on top of the couch head rests. She likes to sit in the recliner next to the window and stare out the window. Lady does get pretty possessive of particular bones when the cats are near. Of course the cats don't want the bone, but in her crazy mind....they are plotting to take them from her.

I have three cats with Dillon.
Misty is the eldest, 16 yr old insulin dependent diabetic ( since 2001) and she is a grey short haired domestic - and from day one when we brought Dillon home, she was curious about him but would never run from him, he would try to make her with a few jabs of his nose and a bark or two, but she just would look at me, like "make it stop" and I would correct the behavior. They get along great. Suki, my brown maine coon cross kitty, she is 9 yrs old and she is scared of her shadow. She tends to run away but is not the brightest girl, so rather than jumping onto something high, or running up a cat tree, she ends up hiding in plain view and he catches her, she rolls over on her back and he pokes her with his nose. She "fights back" with a few meows and one or two swats, but never uses her claws. I end up usually having to tell Dillon to leave her be, and even when he has been called off, she stays there or walks away just to come back two second later, so i wonder if she really hates it or not. She is just too fun to chase. Ka-sea (pronounced casey) is my tiny 6 pound 7 yr old black smoke persian...she is fast as lightning, Dillon cannot catch her unless she lets him. She is very flirty with him, teasing him and trying to get him to chase her- its all a game, and she will run up the closest cat tree if he does manage to get too close... and when he does manage to corner her, she usually goes up and waves her tail in his face, and head buts his chin and he just doesnt know how to react to this, and in his stupor, she is easily able to escape. Here are some of my cat pictures.
The first one is Owen who is 1 1/2 years old and likes to tease Cody. He has a very nice calm personality , but doesn't want anyone to know that he is a mamas boy and will only snuggle with my at night time when I am up by the computer on Go Corgi and NO ONE can see him. The 2nd one is Billy aka Tubby. He is 12 1/2 and a very sweet boy, but gets grumpy when his tummy is hungry and he knows that lunch is overdue. He is the big snuggle bug who gives kisses. He likes to challenge Cody a bit and Cody runs the other way. The 3rd picture is of my cat Ernie, aka, the Enforcer, who is 2 1/2 years old, and smallest of all three. He is the ruler of the house, very testy, but has Inflammatory Bowel disease which affects his tummy(vomiting). He is my steroid cat. I did not know he had this when I adopted him, at 8 months old, and when the symptoms showed up a few days after me taking him home, I decided to keep him because the lady at the Humane society said they would probably have to put him down because no one else would want him. Ernie hated Cody the most when I brought Cody home and I had to keep them apart, but all is well with that now. The 4th picture is just another one of Owen. He had been at the Humane society for 3 weeks - he was 3 1/2 months old when I got him. The ladies at the Humane society said the gray and black cats are the last ones to get picked. So it was between him and a brand new beautiful cream colored kitten that they had just gotten in, but I chose the gray one - I felt sorry for him having been there for 3 weeks. We have one cat with Ace.
Peiper is an 8 year old black male. He was the king of the house an then we brought Ace home 5 months ago! Peiper did not like Ace AT ALL when we first got him. Ace was smaller then Peiper and would try to play. Peiper would run away. As Ace grew bigger so did his want for Peiper to be his new playmate. Peiper still has his claws and several times we thought Ace was going to lose an eye or something because he just wouldn't leave Peiper alone. Now Peiper will allow Ace to chase him alittle, Peiper will walk pass Ace - stop and wait - then when Ace decides to follow, Peiper will take off and jump up on something high so Ace can't get him. Peiper will also let Ace jump on him somewhat and wrestle all the while meowing and making growling noises. When Peiper has had enough he will jump up. They have come a LONG way! Maybe someday Peiper will actually lay with Ace or lick him. Or, maybe not! |

It can sure take awhile for some cats to come around and be accepting of the new dog. I remember when I first brought Cody home and the noises that came out of Ernie, my one cat were like no others I had ever heard from him before.
They have come along way, and Ernie allows Cody to come nose to nose with him - he no longer makes those nasty noises at him, but will occasionally meow when Cody attempts to poke his butt with his nose.

I think it depends on the personality of both animals. In our case, Peiper (my cat) was not excited to share him house so it has taken him awhile to come around. Ace is almost 8 months and Peiper is still getting used to him! Ace on the other hand wanted to be friends right away! He has chased the cat daily! He is now starting to leave Peiper alone for periods of time. Ace is just waiting for the day Peiper wants to play!

Jim and Bethany are right,
It depends on the personality of the animals and also sometimes whether the cat is in his senior years or still young. An older cat usually doesn't want an active pup chasing it, while a younger cat may be more willing to accept that. My 3 cats and Cody all get along now, but my senior cat doesn't want Cody to bother him by trying to play, while my youngest cat doesn't seem to mind and will even taunt Cody now to play. When you bring your new pup home, I would bring him inside in his crate and let your cat smell around for a bit. - you may see a puffed up tail and hear some other strange noises being made, but this will all be normal. Then provide a safe room for you cat to be in when y ou let your new pup out. Eventually with time, it will work out on their own terms. Introduce them slowly and start teaching your pup at an early age not to chase the cat if that should happen; and remember to still give your cat love and attention also - easy to forget sometimes with a new Corgi pup around the house Last edited by corgimom; 09-30-2006 at 10:30 PM. |

Great advice Linda. Definitely a good idea to let the cat get used to the dog BEFORE the dog pounces!!!

See Jessica, I learn from experience
I didn't do that when I brought Cody home because I thought that since my cats had previously lived with a dog, they would have no problem however, when I brought Cody into the house on his leash, the cats were all around the fireplace and when they turned around and saw him, they all sort of looked like And especially for any cat that may not have ever resided with a dog, I think bringing the pup inside in his crate for a first meeting would be advisable

I have brought in three Corgis now to my 5 cats. Rupe and Riley were very young, 8 weeks and they were kept segregated most of the time so the cats were able to approach them safely. Cats are smart, they leave if they are not interested or they'll give the dog a smack when they've had enough.
Jemma arrived at 7 months and had never seen a cat in her life. She was quite calm about the whole thing. She walked in and 3 of them were just sitting there looking at her. Now, 5 weeks later, she quite enjoys chaising them, but they just go somewhere she can't get to when they've had enough, or they smack her down - they don't have claws. These photos were taken in the first 5 minutes she was home.
