Cardi pup is a local
I took Taylor down for a quick romp in a park/reserve today - just prior to an important rugby match telecast live on tv - a low and behold the only other people and dog at the park was a guy with his two little children and this black amd white Cardi pup. The guy said he lived locally and the Cardi's name was Megs - an 11 month old female. Quite pretty, but more of a character. Small in size but very healthy and alert and very very friendly and very kissy - and very annoying to Taylor.
It turned out that Megs was brought from a large pet shop at age five months. The pet shop had five Cardi pups for sale from the same litter at age two months but Megs didn't sell quickly and was still in the pet shop some three months later. Imagine three months in a pet shop behind a glass enclosure! Typically, this guy had no intention of buying a puppy but he and his family took to Megs and so they paid $700. I am going to rope the family and Megs into my Wellington Welsh Corgi Walking Group. They only live about a five minute walk from where I live. Isn't it amazing that they have never seen Taylor before nor I Megs. Megs has lazy ears ie not always erect. And I put this down to a lack of calcium. So the guy is going to get some calcium supplement from the local pharmacy shop. Megs did not have a great start in life in being camped in a pet shop for too long and now been owned by a rookie dog owner. The guy admitted its taken a lot of time to get her to where she now is - a better adjusted Corgi. Last edited by Michael Romanos; 09-23-2006 at 09:11 PM. |

That is a great story Michael. I am so glad the little cardi was "rescued" They sound like they are good parents.

It's funny how you can walk in the same area as someone else that has a Corgi and never see them. We go to a large park in Toronto and people keep telling me there's another woman that comes with 2 Pems - the same colours as mine and yet we've never run into them.
That's nice that Megs will possibly meet a group of Corgis and get to hang out with them.

Yes, Megs was affected by her lengthy stay in the pet shop. How, I don't yet know. But she would have been difficult to handle even for an experienced Corgi person.
The other four Cardis were all purchased from the pet store in Wellington - so all the owners should be somewhere around the region. I must get some free radio advertising of the walking group so I might be able to 'catch' one or more of the other Cardi owners. |

My initial raction is that the pup was "rescued" from pet shop. But upon further thought I do not want to use that term because I do not want to do anything that promotes sales in pet stores. Yes the pup was "rescued" but it was a shame he wound up there in the first place. One of the nice things about Cardis not being very popular is that they are usually not found in pet stores.

I crawled into bed last night and turned on Animal Planet. Animal Cops Detroit was on, I should have changed the channel. There was a story about another dog, chained in the backyard that an owner let the collar get embedded.
How does this happen? They fed the dog every day, saw it was suffereng, then one day called animal control and told them they wanted to surrender the dog, come get it. I wanted to get up out of bed, grab my two exhausted Corgis sleeping in crate/snuggle bed (they had a very busy day!) and hug them to pieces. Our little guys have so many advantages when you see how the other half lives. At least the rest of this Cardi's life should be a great one. Go Michael! PS: I am still very envious of your Corgi walking group!

I watch Animal Cops alot and enjoy it very much. I feel so bad for the animals but I also see so much good coming from the SPCA and it is amazing how those animals look with TLC. I like the one from NYC the best.

I watch those shows too - NYC & Detroit are my favorites. My husband asks why I watch them when they upset me so (I am known to yell at the TV like a man watching a football game
) . . . and I tell him that I like them because:1) I like to see the animals get new homes and be happy. 2) I like to see the people get punished! (although the punishments are never as severe as what I would suggest!) I'm glad Megs will have a shot at a good life. Like Cardiguy I am conflicted . . . happy for her, but angry and scared for the ones who will come after her.

I am having trouble in contacting Megs and her owners. The guy with the two little kids and Megs gave me his name (surname I thought) as Grant and the street he lived in. And I said I would look it up in the phone book. Nobody named Grant in Wyndham Road, Pinehaven in the phone book. So I went door to door but covered only about half of a long stretch of street - and no one home who knew of this family or of a little black and white Corgi with a long tail. Maybe the owner is not so bright afterall.

I love the idea of a corgi walking group...I sure wish there were more corgis who lived near me. I know a few that go to our school but they live pretty far away.
That is odd that you couldnt find this corgi person michael...maybe they gave you false info ...but why? people can be so odd... Emilie |

No I don't think the Cardi pup owner set out to mislead me - he was pretty keen on Corgi info and joining the walking group.
My group covers a wide area - as far away as 50 miles. Our walks are over all the region so for some people and their Corgis the trip to the walk is lengthy while with others it's close by. |
