Of all the 350-odd dog clubs in NZ, only the Corgi clubs are 'leagues.' Funny that.

I just thought I bring it up that I see more corgi lovers in Europe (especially Englad, Wales, and Ireland), Japan, and Australia than in the US. Even though Corgis are growing in popularity here in the US, why are they more popular in the UK and Japan?

I know why in the UK since Queen Elizabeth loves them! But, why not as much in the US? It's not like it's not a favorite breed here but I don't see as much as the retrievers and dachsunds.

All the corgi owners I know of who have visited Wales have yet to have a corgi sighting. No memorabilia/collectibles in the shops even. A family who adopted one of my rescues spent a year in England and visited Wales. They reported back they didn't spot corgi one. I did get a postcard from Pembroke Wales, no corgi on it though. I met a native of Wales and his wife recently and their corgi. They visit his home a couple of times a year and I asked about corgis there - they said they'd never had a sighting either.

Japan, space and size is an issue. As corgis are dwarfs (medium size dogs on short legs) they fit well within the space issue.

Corgis don't have the beloved reputation you might think in England and due in part to the Queen. Her's are not known for having the best of temperaments shall we say?

Depends upon where one is; corgis are VERY popular in the US. There is a pretty large corgi contingency in New York City even. Just have to know where to look.

Sweetlychee - there is no country in the world that has more Corgis than the USA. The USA would have the most Corgis by miles and miles. There are more Corgis in NZ than there is in Japan, Wales, Scotland and Ireland but less than there are in Australia, England and Canada. Parts of Europe (other than the UK and Ireland) have good numbers of Corgis.

Suzan - It would be the beginning of the end for dogs as individual human and family companions if legislation that demands fixing all breeds of dogs is ever introduced. I've said it before - but Governments and health authorities should be encouraging dog ownership because of all the great benefits that come from owning a dog - more so if the breed of dog requires daily and meaningful exercising.

That's just it Michael, that type legislation has not only been introduced, it is now law in many places in the US. Breed Specific Legislation which outlaws certain breeds of dogs is law in many places and continues to be introduced. IF it is illegal to own certain breeds of dogs of one's choice, what do you think happens to those breeds? - extinction. The question then becomes, which breed will be the next to be targeted? Corgis are already on a list in Italy as a dangerous dog breed. Limit laws - how many animals one can legally own are spreading. IF passed in one's town that it is legal only to own 2 dogs and one cat, and anyone here owns 4 dogs and 2 cats, which animals are you going to give up? I've got to go do research for someone on this very issue because of proposed legislation coming up in Kingsport, TN. This is reality and sure the dickens isn't "whining." I don't care how many dog friendly vehicles the Japanese come out with, since Subaru came out with theirs, it has been nothing but more and more BSL, MSN, limit laws and restrictions on pet ownership in the US.

Deb, we already have limit laws here in our town.

Residents can own no more than 5 animals, and out of the 5, there can be no more than 3 dogs.

And I have noticed that they have doubled the price of licensing fees also since last year.

Our city also only allows two dogs maximum per family (not sure on cats or total animals off the top of my head since I only have dogs). I see a lot of families breaking that ruling, and only have seen them enforce it once....on someone that was running a rescue but didn't have all the liscenses. They took all but two of her dogs and put them in kill shelters.... and then fined her. I sure wish they would fix what's actually broken and stop making it hard for those that love animals to help. I can't imagine a corgi ending up on a breed legislation list like that.... someone definitely has their priorities messed up big time!

Checkers,

I know what you mean, there is a cat rescue here in Wisconsin, I think around New Berlin and they had their "pleas" on Pet finder last year because they were forced to get rid of their cats they were caring for in their homes(due to limits imposed by the city).I think some of them were shipped down to the Milwaukee area to other rescues. Sad, for those people who have a big heart and really want to help and make a difference.

Wasn't this thread about a car?? I guess, the car has moved to a different location

strange how a car could have started off a thread on legistrations....In Singapore we are not allowed to have medium or large breed dogs in the HDB flats. Only toys breeds which will grow to a max of 10Kg. In private housing areas, we are able to have any breed of dogs but maximum of 4 dogs.

I support spay/neuter legislation. I think it is a good thing. I believe Albuquerque is one of the cities getting lots of criticism and much of what I read from the city web site, I agree with.

I do not however, support breed specific legislation. And I do see them as separate issues.

I don't buy that mandatory spay/neuter "will put an end to pet ownership". Do I think it will limit family pets to families who can afford higher prices from breeders/shelters, etc? Probably. Is this fair? Probably not.

I truly believe there will always be shelter dogs, no way will there be 100% compliance. Mandatory spay/neuter will cause breeders (the good, bad, and ugly) to raise the prices of dogs. I do not buy that all breeders will stop breeding dogs. I do believe they will pass the increased price along to those who want to buy pure breed puppies. And I do believe there will always be a market.

Dog friendly cars, dog friendly hotels, take a look at the clothes, halloween costumes, all the products marketed to pet owners. Family pets will not disappear. That's my $.02!

There are a few cities in NZ where you are restricted in urban areas to four dogs. This means you are still alllowed to breed puppies but once they are past a certain age, eg six months, the breeders will have to revert back to the four dog restriction. THis kind of rule does not generally appy in rural and semi rural areas. There was a recent case of a vet in a city close to where I live, owning six German Shepherds. The matter received publicity and the local council had to back down because of public pressure - here was a vet keeping him and his wife's dogs in perfect condition and not creating a noise nusiance etc. If you want to keep a dozen dogs or so, there are quite a lot of places you can go and live in NZ - just as there must be in the USA. But is that option on the decrease?
