Who do your corgis like to romp with?

Hey everybody. I’ve noticed that when Penny plays with other dogs at the dog park, or play groups at my local humane society, she seems to have a preference for playing with smaller dogs that have “moppy” hair. Has anyone else noticed their corgis showing a preference for playing with one type of dog over another?

Well Lady loves her boyfriend Vadar and plays with him better than with other dogs. Another neighbor of mine has a dog that puts her paw on her and pushes her away. That dog is more of a muscle dog and Lady doesn't like it. Lady does love big dogs. Like retreiver type size dogs. It's funny cuz she'll put her nose to theirs and give a look like she is saying "Wow you're big!".

Rhys isn't too picky...but he likes to wrestle with dogs his size or - preferably - larger! Usually short coat dogs like Labs, boxers, sheperds - also border collies or aussies with rough coats.

Sometimes he will get fascinated by a little dog and try to wrestle with it and bark right in its face. I like to discourage that.

He also LOVES to run after the pointers, weimareiners, other long-legged runners.

Dillon, my 16 month old corgi, has a definately preference for other corgis...he sees one and he wants to go play with it. He really plays so well with other corgis...you can see he is having a blast. He likes to herd the big dogs - so he will chase after them all, and he loves the chase. Really hyper dogs, with nervous energy - especially small ones -make him nuts, and he does NOT play well with them, I think he gets wierded out by their behavior and i notice the hair on the back of his neck and butt start standing up and he starts to get growly and more dominant acting, and by that point i usually call him back over before things get ugly becuase I just dont take chances.

Ace perfers the smaller dogs or and dog that will be submissive! He has a puppy playmate that is a Bichon Frise. He tends to seek out dogs that look like that - white and fuffy! He likes to bite at the other puppy's beard and ears. I think he thinks the Bichon Frise is a sheep!!!

Taylor has a definite preference for dogs more his size. His greatest likings of other breeds seem to be for Miniture Schnauzers and Welsh Springer Spaniels as groups of dogs. But he really really likes other Pems - especially the girls.
His blggest dislike as a group of dogs is the Boxer.

Duchess will not play with dogs at all. She tolorates the very large ones. Seems to like regular large dogs like golden retrievers, dogs her size and if they aren't too frisky the smaller dogs.
The most exercize she gets is when the large dogs run and she runs after them barking, like herding.

Chip loves to play with Maybelle - who is getting to be a good size dog - I think she is a collie shepherd mix. She is fluffy and Chip pulls on her too. He also like to play with Sheila & Tank both blue heelers. Although, when they get rough, he comes over to me and avoids them. He is friendly with all dogs, but sometimes he goes belly up. I try to watch him real close because he has no fear of them.

Rupe is not particularly friendly with other new dogs when he meets them. He really dislikes any of the push nosed dogs like pugs, boxers (he was attacked by one), and bulldogs. He loves beagles and Jack Russels. His best friend was a Black and Tan Coonhound, who has sadly moved, but they would wrestle and play to exhaustion! His current best friend is a Portuguese Water Dog - who can do anything to Rupe and Rupe will take it. He does chase any dog that is chasing a ball or is just willing to be chased.

Jemma is at that pup stage where she love everyone. There's a tiny little Yorkie pup in our building that she loves to chase around. And of course, she loves her big brother.

Jackie likes the big dogs best . . . although she'll play with anything that moves. I have to watch her with the little dogs, because she is used to wrestling bigger dogs, so I'm afraid she will squash the little ones! Her standard greeting is to stand on her back legs, as if to hug the other dog.

I am trying to discourage this for many reasons, not the least of which is that not every dog wants to be "hugged", and I am afraid of her getting hurt. But it is extremely difficult to dampen her enthusiasm . . . she's irrepressible!!!

I find that Pems generally do not particularly like other dogs that are too assertive or ones that are filled with over-the-top friskiness.

Jessica-
You just described how Dillon greets every dog he meets, he hugs everyone...big, small he doesnt show any fear. This is my big worry too. In class He decided he wanted to say hi to an Irish Wolfhoud...I nearly had a heart attack, however this dog turned out to be the sweetest girl ever and loves Dillon to pieces, but oh dear, she was huge...but no matter how hard i try to discourage the "hugging" behavior , he still does it- he tries to even do it to small dogs, and i worry about that becuase he is heavy - i certainly dont want him to hurt anyone elses dog.

Michael, I agree with your assessment, those are the two kinds of dogs that Dillon likes least...especially the over excited, hyper ones...they just freak him out.

The only dogs Ruby tolerates are at the dog park and she will interact with only certain small dogs and that is on a limited basis. On walks nothing-dogs and people- is tolerated as Ruby is in full protection mode. What a shame! I really don't know what to do either but keep her on a short leash during walks.
