Down-weight

Taylor, my 3 year old Pem with the long body, was officially weighed today at the vets and I can hardly believe it but he weighed in at 11.4kg which is 25.7 pounds. I had the nurse reweigh him three times - and yep, it was confirmed. Twelve months ago he was officially weighed at 12.9kg which is around 29 pounds and he looks at least as bulky today than he did at that time. Maybe I'm just use to his current waistline following on from all the exercise and agility training he gets. Anyway, the vet thought Taylor looks terribly healthy and well and said he wouldn't like to see Taylor under 10kg or over 13kg. Fat chance of that.

Trax my 12 year old sable/white PWC boy is 16kg and Barn2 my 2 year old tri (going to 3 in a few weeks' time) is 15kg. He's a bit long as well.

Er....what is supposed to be the proper weight of corgis?

Omg, Milo is 9 months old and he weighs as much as Taylor! He doesn't look fat but he looks thick and muscular at times. So, are we feeding Milo too much?! He has a lot of exercises too. Oh dear.

Dogs, like people come in different bone and body sizes which means their weights can vary. You should be able to feel their ribs - not see them and by feel, I mean not have to poke through inches of fat. If it makes you feel better SweetlyChee, Rupe is a whopping 40 pounds - but he only needs to lose a couple of pounds - the vet says he is fine. He's just a big boy!

Sweetly Chee,

Cody will be 11 months old on Ocotber 12th, and he weighs around 26 1/2 pounds. He is not overweight, but seems well proportioned to me.

Ace will be 8 months tomorrow and he weighs 32 pounds. We were worried about his weight at first but were told he is fine. We can feel his ribs no problem. Ace is just a linebacker!(thick and solid) He always has been. He weighed 9 pounds when we got him at 8 weeks! Also, Ace is a cardigan so they tend to be bigger and heavier.

Dillon is 16 months old and he weighed in at 27 lbs at his one year physical at the end of August. He is fit. He does come from larger corgi stock ( his great grandfather in his prime was 32 lbs, his father is a 30 lb corgi, his mom is about 26 lbs and not fat.)

My Lady was weighed 17 lbs about 2 months ago. She is a little girl. Her boyfriend Vadar is much heavier, but he doesn't look fat. Since I only know other Corgis that are boys, I can very well assume that the boys are considerably bigger than the girls. Even the little pup I had for a little while had bigger paws at 4 months of age than Lady's paws at over 1 yr old.

With Taylors weight loss I imagine that his breeder would say, if she saw him, that he is looking quite skinny. You mentioned before that it was either his breeder or someone else that said they thought he looked too thin at 28 pounds; and you said he would still look fine at the 32 pound mark.

Linda - funny enough, Taylor's breeder did see us over last weekend at the NZ national dog show. But Taylor is in full coat and his coat is thicker than at any other time, so he doesn't look too slim even if he has lost lets say a couple of pounds since the previous time his breeder saw him. Yea, I'd say that up to 33 pounds, he would look just fine for showing - but that's not to say that is a healthy weight for him. Its the same as with humans, it's said that you have to look sick to be fit (at least as a running athlete or a competition cyclist) - so too a Corgi to be really fit, would not want to be at a conformation show weight.

We have to look sick to be fit I am glad I am not a running athlete or competition cyclist - I would lose before I even got started.

Another thing with Taylor is that with all the agility training and exercise he gets, he has a lot of muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat.

Miss Gambler weighs around 35 pounds, and is SOLID. The vet did tell us at her last physical to watch her weight and to maybe bring it down some. I think that we cause any problem that they may have, I mean, let's face it, they don't cook for themselves, go through the drive through for burgers for themselves, or even pour their own food, so it's up to us to guide our Corgis and I do not believe in making our babies go without, I do believe we have to treat them like ourselves. Let us all now say "portion control" together.

Take care, and love your corgi!

PORTION CONTROL
PORTION CONTROL

Very good. We need to treat our Corgis like we SHOULD be treating ourselves - plenty of quality exercise complemented with PORTION CONTROL - meals and food that is quality rather than quantity.
