Talking How to celebrate your corgi's birthday? - 10-09-2006, 12:40 PM

Hi All,

I searched through the site before posting this topic. Even though Milo's birthday is a few months away (January 14 to be exact), I was searching around ideas and gifts for his birthday.

I saw Michael's thread on baking that birthday carrot cake. I think that's a great idea but I'm not adept in baking/cooking/working the stove at all! I was wondering if there's another way to throw a birthday for Milo. I know it's a bit early but it's never too early to love my corgi! I know my co-workers plan 6-9 months in advance for their own (human) kids! So, I'm not that bad now!

Any ideas on how to celebrate a corgi's birthday? Of course, I plan to have food, camera, and people there. I was also planning to order custom made shirts with Milo's face and make everyone wear it. I think my family will smack me for doing that!

Thanks, guys!

Great idea, Emilie. But, I have to find some kind of birthday cake for him. Hahah, and yes, he's not a fan of dogs as you commented on the other thread.

There are lots of places now around the country that specialize in dog cookies and cakes and such. I would do a google search for the area you live for dog bakeries or home made dog cookies, and you might be surprised to find you have a little shop somewhere close by. We found that one of the natural food stores we have in the area, sold nice little doggie cupcakes! very cute! You also don't want to get too big a cake for Milo..I found the cutest cake at that bakery but it was enough for 4 corgis! and i didnt want him eating all that much, so maybe a decorated cupcake / or big cookie would be good too!

Here is a link where they sell the bone shaped pans for cakes and it looks like they have the Carob cake mix in a box you could order and make it at home for him.

For their joint birthday party, Rhys and his "girlfriend" Lulu shared a carob/yogurt covered "bone" made of peanut butter and puffed rice. They had a piece of that and a can of Nutro Natural Choice dessert (Lulu had apple torte, Rhys had pumpkin crumble). No complaints from either of them!
Lulu's mommy got the bone from a small doggy boutique not far from our university. I'm sure you can find something like that.

Originally we looked at some websites : www.funstufffordogs.com
and http://www.dogbirthdaysandparties.com/
You don't have to buy anything, but you can see some ideas.

If Milo's birthday celebrations are going to include other dogs, here are a few suggestions: Prizes for the winners: dog biscuit eating competition - give each dog a large dog biscuit and the first to fully consume the biscuit, wins; chair sitting - each dog has a chair to sit on so when each person calls them up from the floor/ground, the first to sit on their chair, wins; musical cushions (or towels) - when the music stops, the handler heads their dog for the nearest cushion/towel to stand at least one foot on, elimination until one left to be declared the prize winner.

The point about baking your own Corgi cakes is that all the ingredience are perfectly suitable for dogs no sugar, no salt , no artifical coloring etc - you won't normally get this from a shop. However dogs usually love grainy bread (non white) especially when toasted and sliced in two with a peanut butter spread. So the only cooking is toasting the bread - and it need not be given hot or warm.

Maybe you can coax a bus or train company to let Milo on board for a joy ride. Last Sunday, there was a celebration of extended opening hours for the Upper Hutt City library put on by the local City Council and they had a double decker bus ( like the ones they have in London) to take people on free rides for 15-20 minures. I talked the irganisers in to allowing Taylor on the bus with me, my wife and son, and Taylor of course headed up to the top deck for what is the real ride and the best view. That was fun for a Corgi.

Checkers celebrated his first birthday on May 13th this year and we didn't go TOO far out with cake or whatever, but he got an extra chewy bone, some dog cookies.... and a new baby swimming pool to "swim" and play in. He loved that one a bunch... hmm.. but in January that might not go over so well LOL. That's about it for ideas from me, helpful right?! hehe

Wow, Michael - I didn't know toasting the bread they'll like, That sounds easy and doable for me!

By the time in Jan., it'll be very cold for Milo to go for a ride. He sits in the car often and sticks his head out during the warmer months to enjoy the breeze.

The cake thing sounds great. Maybe I'll find a way to it! I love all the suggestions and they are so helpful! THanks, all! You guys really know your stuff. And I value all of your advice and input. I'm very open minded when it comes to these discussions.

I wish Milo can have friends over for his birthday but he seems stubborn and bossy. Now, I have to find him somewhere to be trained.
