Rolling on the ground during walks
At least 2 times a walk Ruby will stop and roll around on her back on the grass -apparently a form of scent marking. She really looks like she is in heaven when she does this and sometimes it lasts for 30 or so seconds. I dare not pull on her leash while she is in this vulnerable position so I just wait for her to finish. Sometimes she will do it numerous times and when we come back inside before I take the leash off she will roll on the carpet. Mostly she rolls imediately after I take the leash off. I was alway curious if this was pure delight or just marking or some combination of the two.

Rupert is a maniac roller - Riley did it all the time too. Rupe grunts and smiles and goes crazy! Jemma does it as well. I often have people walk past me chuckling away as I have two dogs at the end of their leashes rolling and grunting away. I think it's a combo, like you do, of pure happiness and some scent marking.
I find Rupe rolls in a different way, like it's all business when he rolls on something nasty to pick up it's scent.

Rhys rarely rolls outside, but he LOVES to roll inside! Especially after he has had a bath...he just goes nutty.
Last night, he was playing around and he rolled and slid *thunk*, right into the front of the couch. Didn't even phase him.

I think it is some of both as well. Also, when they find something particularly odorous to us/perfume to them
to roll in, in the wild it would be masking their scent and is an aid in hunting or protection. Debbie |

*~* Sunshine likes to go along my baseboards and then slide down to the carpet. She then...preoceeds to roll --->>> in between the hallway walls !!
She is a CRAZY Corgi girlie.....this is...like...a routine for her in the morning. I will be just getting outta the shower...I have my towel around my body...and I hear, "arrrrr...roo...arrrr...humph..humph". Sunshine is doing "broadies" in the hallway AGAIN !! Midnight rolls around the house with her Pig Skin Twist Bone in her mouth. Midnight likes to roll around the house with items in her mouth...a bone, a ball, a cookie...etc. When I take BOTH of my girls for a walk outside...they like to roll around on the grass !! Especially right after it has been watered ! I have learned to bring an old towel with me on our walks. AH...and those handy "poopie bags" as well ! Midnight & Sunshine ALSO love to roll around on dead critters on the sidewalk ! Worms...or SNAILS are a favorite for them. ** What I love the most about seeing them roll around....is their facial expressions ! They honestly do look like they are smiling ! They also seem to sound like they are CHUCKLING ! When I write that I have "CRAZY Corgi(s)"...is a term of endearment !! I meant...that they are DEAR to me & my heart !! A Corgi is an endearing....BREED ?????????? sweet, sensitive, ENDEARING ?? I think so ! *~* Nikki

I like to call it the Corgi death roll. Tuck is a manic roller. I love it when he gives it a running start, right shoulder to the ground, then onto the back, then all 4 legs kicking in the air, rolling back and forth, then hops up and runs on.
The funniest things was watching him teach this to Lulu and watching Lulu perfect it the first week she came to live with us. At first she'd watch him as if to say "what????" . Then she tried and within a week she was able to give it a running start and do side-by-side rolls w/ Tuck. SHe'd roll into him and Tuck would pop up all indignant "she's in my spot!". The whiner! The look on their face is true delight! Watching Tuck do this in the snow was a real hoot. He tried to teach his cockerpoo buddy how to do it and he never got it.

Rupe does the same as Tuck, it's a crazy run, dip the shoulder, flip and wild giration of shoulders one way - hips the other! He makes his goofy gorilla-baby grunting noises too.

At any park or on any track in the bush or forest or at a beach etc I would be very suspiciuos if Taylor rolls. A few times I have stopped him only to not find what I had suspected - some stinky thing or smell that was left behind. So I had to apologise to Taylor and usually he loses his momentum. But still, I guess it pays to be cautious if you want a dog to have a coat fit for humans to enjoy and not have to wash him down when you get home or worse, have no choice but to take him in the car before getting home to wash out the stench.
