We have 2 cardigan corgis that are 15 months and 7 months. To keep them from chewing the furniture while we are at work, we lock them up in their respective little cages. They don't seem to mind this at all but I get concerned sometimes if we have to work late and they are in there for 9 or 10 hours. I have made a 10X15 dog run in the back yard for when we are gone for just a little bit but am concerned about them for the whole day being outside. We are in a subdivision in the country so I worry about them getting out, hawks pestering them, people knowing we have them and trying to steal them, etc. How does everyone else take care of their pets when they are gone for the whole day? I would like to hear your stories, ideas or suggestions about leaving a pet locked up all day and how you do it? Thanks for the info.

Do you have someone that could come in at noon and take them out? If not, you could leave them secured in one room behind a baby gate. Or in a large x-pen, I would never leave my dogs outside alone.
Mine have 2 oversized kennels in the familyroom, but I only leave them in there up to 4 hours max. Ususally they are in the laundryroom, in open kennels, but the room (approx 9x12) is closed of with a gate. Hope this helps.

Check out a thread from last week - we had a lengthy discussion on how long our dogs were left alone and what we did with them while we were away for the day at work.
It was a thread by Sweetlychee - called "On average how many hours are your Corgis left alone?" It's under General discussions on page two.

I am also concern in the future when we move to a new place and how to keep Milo safe and happy at home alone while we work. I am most worried about him being bored and not having to go outside to potty. At least you have two cardigans to keep each other company. I currently have our parents to take care of Milo while we work - they are both retired. But when we move, Milo will have only us. I was thinking of putting him in the largest room and gated so he won't go to the other rooms. Water, food, and all his toys will be there. I will also put a pee pad there in case he needs to use it but so far he has gone potty only outside and he doesn't use the pee pad. If he makes an accident, I won't yell at him and just clean it. I don't really trust dog walkers (it's the New Yorker in me). If there's a better idea, please suggest anyone. Good luck! |

We purchased a crate for Miss Gambler that is for a large breed dog, plenty of room to move, and it stays in our bedroom. We also litterbox trained her. We read about this radical training when she was just a baby and gave it a try when all else failed in the crate. It's just a regualr litter box with cat litter(they do make dog litter but it stinks). Miss Gambler had absolutely no problem with this and took to it on her own, no training. It is also something that works very well in hotels because we travel with her crate as well.
Take care, and love your corgi! |

X pens! Gate them into small sections of a room where they can;'t damage anything but provides entertainment for them ( a view, TV, etc).
My best friend os my X pen!
