When to bring a puppy home (or when not to)
Snowflake writes:
Hi everyone, im getting a corgi for Christmas probably and I need some info about them. Please pm me if you can help me! Christmas and/or holiday seasons are one of the worst times to bring a puppy into a home for the majority of families. Too many activities going on, too many people in and out, trips and visits - just too, too much of everything. Puppies, or even adult dogs (as in bringing in a rescue) need a stable, structure or order in the home. They need regular routines in order to help them make optimum adjustments and settle into their new home. Breeders (reputable, responsible ones that is) more often than not will NOT send a puppy to its new home "for Christmas." Same with rescue groups and even shelters will stop adoptions during this time period. Secondly, what kind of "info" do you need about puppies? They chew, bite, sleep, eat, pee, poo, and play. There are plenty of threads on the forum about puppies, I'd recommend reading through those. IF you have more specific questions in mind, then feel free to ask. Debbie |

Hello snowflake
I would recommend going to your local library and picking up some books on puppy care and specific breeds. Also, if you use the search feature here, there are many topics on puppies. Being 10 years old, is your mom and dad going to help you with this puppy? Have you or your parents ever had a puppy? Do you plan on keeping him/her inside? You should also find a good veterinarian for all your puppy care.

Most people are busy around the holidays visiting family and celebrating Christmas and often have guests staying at their homes, and the last thing they need is a new puppy that really needs constant supervision much like a new baby. Puppies need to be fed on a regular schedule and also taken out potty quite frequently and you cannot let a puppy roam around the house without someone keeping an eye on it at all times. They will chew on furniture and possibly other dangerous stuff if they are not monitored and you need to spend time playing with them along with teaching them proper doggy manners. Not all puppies sleep through the night either. They need to be in a crate for the night, which will keep them safe and help with potty training them, so someone has to be willing and available to get up with them during the night to take them out if that is necessary Last edited by corgimom; 11-13-2006 at 08:07 AM. |

I second Bonnie's suggestion to go to your school library and check out some books on different dog breeds and pet/dog/puppy care. I could make some recommendations, but I'm afraid they would not be age appropriate for you to understand. IF your parents would like to join us on the forum, then we can try to prepare you as a family as to what to expect.
Why did you decide on a corgi? Debbie |

Or snowflake you could by puppies for dummies
Read this it is really helping me to prepare for a new puppy. Plus it is easier to understand. I highly recommend this book to all people who are even thinking about getting any sort of dog. Make sure the breed is right for you and make sure that you and the dog don't bump heads. |
