You guys have given me some great advice, thank you.
I am off work today, am going to go with my son to sign up for college. We'll see how he does, I am hopeful..... Then we are off to get him a bigger cage for his iguana (Emma). While at the pet store I am going to go ahead and pick a martingale collar and shorter nylon leash. I did find a link on being a tree . http://www.diamondsintheruff.com/nopulling.html

The link on being a tree is a great one. I have kept it on my favorites list.
With everyones help I have solved the pulling dillema. I will just shorten up the flexi lead until I am sure there are no chasables in site. That way there is not so much jerk on her throat. I am going to the pet store today to purchase a martingale collar. Last edited by Jane Austen; 12-06-2006 at 10:58 AM. |

My choker chains and leashes are all extraordinarily - and deliberately - lightweight, and that's why I sometimes switch off and can't feel that I am holding a leash with a Corgi attached to it. Heavier leashes, collars and chocker chains are not for Corgis, I find - they would only have a potentially adverse affect.

Barbara - I got a good laugh out of that picture of Dylan and his leash wrap!
He really doesn't seem to happy about that! Maybe he is worried because the back loop is close to his...you know...*manly bits*.

I think the website that I saw the Martingale collar on said the measurements for a corgi was the 14"-16" size. Does that sound correct? I wouldn't want to order the wrong size. Does anyone know any chain of pet stores that sell the martingales? I would rather be able to see one live than order thru the mail.

Michael - I thought you would get a laugh out of that.
Cindy - I am jealous - I can't grow a dogwood for the life of me. I have planted them carefully, lovingly watered them, prayed over them and they still die on me. I have had three now - no more dogwoods for me.

Jane-
Petco sells them, you really have to look, they are on the bottom with the leashes and collars. They are the same nylon webbing material as the leashes there. What i did was actually buy one there first to make sure it worked for him, then i went out and spent the big bucks on the really pretty ones at around the hounds website. The size can vary depending on the size of your corgi - mine does have the 14-16 inch size- but others might need smaller or larger depending on their dogs, best way is to measure your dog. Cindy, you should see some of the designs they have, talk about cute, go to www.aroundthehounds.com or go to www.2houndsdesign.com to see some of the cutest. They have one i really want to get for Dillon, it has little martini glasses with olives in it! Check them out... Emilie Last edited by Dillydoodle; 12-07-2006 at 06:20 AM. |

Bonnie,
I have a black thumb. My dogwoods were already here when I moved in, I dont touch them not even the bark for fear they will die. So far I planted 5 things in the last 3 years nothing has survived. LOL Thanks Emilie for the links, I will probably go ahead and just order one.

Bernie started pulling when I began using the Flexi-lead. I immediately stored it away for use later in life after she's completed a few obedience courses.
Now I use one of four leads: A four foot nylon with a flat buckle collar A british slip lead A six foot lead with a flat buckle collar A 35" lunge line with a flat buckle collar When we're doing a long walk and I have no intention of her wandering around (minus the occasional potty break) I use the four foot lead or the british slip lead. She's still a puppy so I'm wary of using any major leash corrections right now. Most of them involve me standing still or walking backwards until she turns around and notices me. I'll also do clicker-training sessions with her on lead, giving her a click/treat each time the leash goes slack after she's been pulling. Some evenings I'll take her for a romp in the grass by the lake and put her on the lunge line and let her run around. We get to work on our recalls and I can watch to see how much she pays attention to me when I walk away from her. I think your first step would be putting away the flexi. Its convenient for the dog, not for the owner or instituting rules. If you want to use a choke chain or martingale, I would go to a training class. Learn how to use it properly first from a good trainer. You can seriously harm your dog without knowing the proper use of a good tool. |
