Her's one way: find a breeder whose female Pem is expecting a litter and ask the breeder not to have the tail of one male or female pup docked. Then again you will be caught having to accept an undocked Pem which may not be up to the standard in other ways that you desired.

No reputable or responsible breeder in the US will agree to such a request. This subject came up on our club's discussion list and none of our breeders would even consider such a notion. Now those breeders breeding for $$$ and not concerned with breeding to the standard would likely be more than happy to take one's money. Now the other option, as I mentioned in another post is to explore options in rescue. There have been a number of wonderful Pembrokes of all ages come through rescue organizations that were undocked. And we've seen a few docked Cardigans as well.

Puppies are usually few and far between in rescue, although I do know of four recently taken from a hoarding situation in middle TN. (They are docked though.) Patience is the key if rescue is the route you choose to go. If you give me an idea of where you are located, I may be able to pass along some recommendations for you to check into.

Just for my curiosity, why are you wanting an undocked Pem?

I live in Northern California. We want a Pem because My brother has had one for years and we love his personality and temperament. His tail was docked. My brother wishes it wasn't though. I do not want a dog for show. We just want a family pet so I see no need to cause pain to the dog and also deny it from having a tail to wag. If anyone knows of an undocked puppy in a rescue situation I would love to hear of it. Also if anyone is willing to sell us an undocked puppy please let me know.

Docking is not a painful process. A part of what makes a Pembroke a Pembroke is that it is a docked breed and in reality a bobbed tail is the most natural for a PWC. I'm not sure about your brother's Pem, but of all the ones that live here and that have passed through my doors don't miss not having a tail to wag and are lacking in nothing about expressing themselves with their tailess bums.

My Maxi was born with out a tail, so if the thought of pain is one of your reasons for wanting a tail, ask the breeder if their puppies were docked or born with out a tail. As far as not having a tail to wag, Maxi does not need a tail to express his feelings. His little bum is so cute, when he is happy his little bum just shakes and the little bobbed tail is just a going. He holds his little tail up when he is confident and having a good time, it is like his triumph flag that flies to show everyone here I am and I am going to conquer the world. His little bobbed tail and bum are the thing that people always comment on when they see him. With is bobbed tail, ears and eyes, there is not way that you do not know what he is trying to tell you. When we take he out the minute he gets out of the porch on to the deck his tail goes up, he stands tall with his chest out, ears straight up and stares into the woods to see if there are any trespassers in his domain (mostly squirrels) then looks up at us as if to say all clear we can go now and confidently trots down the stairs with is little tail straight up. Pembroke's having no tail is one of the things that make them so special.

Hi Jh
Interestingly, my Pem, Taylor does not wag his rear end in anticipation, excitement, pleasure etc. It's a real shame as far as I am concerned. I think I have noticed Taylor, wagging (ever so slightly) only once. Maybe he is subtle. But all my other Corgis had vigourous body waggings. Taylor is more laid back than the others - that could be a reason. His tail bone does not exist whereas all my others had a semblance of a tail bone which formed part of the wagging performances.
