breeders

Okay, as some of you know I was considering getting a pembroke but now have decided on a cardigan. I have located some breeders who have puppies. I spoke with Jacque Chapman in California a week ago. She has a 3 week old litter. I asked about coming out to visit and she said she would get back to me about setting that up. She has not yet but I thought the puppies may still be too young. I also have emailed Betty Ann Seely in Arkansas a lot. She has responded and sent me a picture of a puppy who is now 7 weeks old. But she has not answered some of my questions. I would like to know about or see pictures of all of the puppies. I asked about hip and eye problems and about if we get a comapnion dog if she will give us information on why it is not show quality. She did not answer these questions. Also, I expected her to ask more about me and my family. Is it normal for breeders to not get into these details early on? Am I just too excited about wanting the puppy so I'm getting concerned. I just want ot make sure we get a good puppy for our family.

Hi Liz, I have gotten 4 babies from Betty Ann, and one will be shipped next thurs.,a little blue merle boy. This will be no.5. My oldest who was 3 died last sept. of a fast acting disease that no one knows where it comes from.my vet was not available so i had to take him to emergency and i do not think they knew what it was or how to treat it.He was our heart and so beautiful!! In any case, the breeder was not at fault. your baby is probably from the same litter as mine.what color are you looking at,as she sent me pictures of some black & whites, instead of a blue by mistake. she had a tri-black that was beautiful.Betty Ann is VERY hard to talk to, it is like pulling teeth. All of my babies are beautiful, and sooo sweet! one of mine has an overbite, another has one blue & brown eye,&the next i think the coloring is wrong. 2 are b & s at 8 months, one is now 3.I really don't know what to tell you about her, other than being short for words, and if you look around she has produced a lot of champions.i have talked with other breeders and they had no unkind words about her.She is well known in the cardi world.you do what you feel comfortable with. You can call her if you wish,i do.She does seem to care about her animals.when did not call her after i got my last 2 (there was a miscommunication) she called me frantic to see if i got them.I have had many dogs in the past, but the cardi is one of a kind.I will never own any other breed.they are funny, so sweet, smart and adapt VERY easily to your lifestyle.some of their antics are hilarious. I have learned you MUST be firm with them when training. Not mean, you know what i mean! Let me know what you decide, and what you are getting.

It is important that the breeder communicates to a high level and leaves no issue unturned or unattended and offers to give written advice eg a puppy's food menu and feeding structure. Afterall, you are going to pay big money and giving of a lot of time and energy, this demands that you are very satisfactorily and professionally treated and responded to. Getting a Corgi is big time. You pay the money ( or are in the process of committing yourself to pay) - you deserve a full and personal service. The breeder has no right to be non-forthcomming.

Yes I know of them. They've got a really young litter just now with one of those interesting color surprises Cardigan color genetics and Mother Nature likes to pull on breeders. They are very active in the CWCCA and husband Don is on the Board of Directors.

What kind of color surprises?
Do you think they would be a good place for me to get a puppy?

They got some clear reds out of a blue to black breeding, just one of those interesting things in CWC color genetics.

I know they have had a lot of satisfied puppy buyers over the years. A big key though is what is your comfort level with a breeder? Do you click and feel some kind of connection? I have a friend who recently got an older puppy show girl from Jacque Chapman they are very pleased with especially with her personality and temperament.

As a puppy buyer I understand the excitement and being very anxious. However, patience is a good thing to have. Breeders with very new litters - well all their time is spent taking care of those wee ones and the puppies take priority over answering e-mails. So just because someone hasn't answered immediately, it isn't necessarily because they are being rude or ignoring you - they just may have their hands full.

I am very excited and anxious about choosing our puppy. It also occured to me that the breeders with young puppies would be busy. But then I have heard and read that it is important to find a breeder that answers all your questions and is professional. I want my puppy to be healthy and I want the breeder to help me with things like what to feed the puppy. It would be ideal to get a puppy from Jacque because we could actually go visit the puppies. But I have called her and requested to visit. She said she would get back to me in a week and then she didn't. And then I left another message for her a couple days ago. Betty Ann's puppies would be availble sooner which is appealing. But in our emails she has not really answered all my questions. But Molly says she has gotten puppies from her and that she is short on words. And then Susan has seemed the most professional to me. She attached a copy of her contract and some information about them in an email. But she alos has not responded to an email I sent a couple days ago.

Give Susan a couple more days and then drop her another note maybe. While computers are great, computers do go down, e-mails bounce and sometimes messages get lost.

What kind of answers have you been looking for that haven't satisfactorily been answered?

As a journalist, if one is anxious to get a response, telephone rather than email. The telephone conversation can be quick - just to say that an email is to follow. In that way, you'll know at least what Debbie has said about problems associated with emailing. People ignore or forget emails just like they do messages left on the telephone. When you are all hyped up, you tend to notice more readily how people can let you down.

Hi Liz, I pick up my baby today, so excited! I can tell you Betty Ann has an ill mother and is trying to get everything arranged for her care, as she is going to a dog show this weekend. While sometimes i find her hard to talk to,she has always answered my questions.I do call her at times, because i find it easier, and more informational. As i said before, you need to go with who YOU feel comfortable with. Does not seem like we are helping much. Good luck!

I appreciate all your feedback. It has been helpful. I tried calling all three breeders today. I got through to Susan and she answered my questions well. But she does not have cats or small children around the puppies (but does have 10 year old who plays with them). I have a 5 year old and cats. Do young puppies usually adjust well to them or would it be better to get a puppy that has already been exposed to those things? I could not get through to Jacque or Betty Ann, so I emailed them both again.

A well behaved five year old child (yes children will be children, I know <vbg> and cats should not be a problem for a puppy. And if the cats are dog savvy, then all the better.

Eight times out of ten, Corgi puppies just adore little children. It's the children who need the training and the restraint. Cats usually are dominant over dogs and it is your cat that you need to be watchful of that he/she does not attack the puppy with those lethal claws.

Both Betty Ann and Jacque did email me back. They both seem to be very busy. Susan has told me that if I send a $150 deposit I will get the 1st choice of the companion males. She has 2 clear reds that she thinks will probably work for us.
