Dale doesn't have a tail - 01-30-2007, 03:06 PM

My Chip has the cutest little nubbin that is about 2 inches long and when he gets to waggin it, it is so cute but Dale doesn't have hardly anything at all. It is real hard to see if he is wagging it or not. Does anyone elses pems have a short tail? I know they aren't supposed to have a tail, but I kind of miss it on Dale. Do you think his will grow some?

I don't think it will grow Bonnie. Jackie has no tail either (which I'm sure you can tell by the numerous pictures of her butt!), and you can't tell if she is trying to wag or not. But you can tell her mood by the expression on her face. I love the no-tail look, personally.

Dillon is tailless as well, but there is no mistaking his enthusiasm to see people, he waggles his whole back end. I love his bunny butt. Dale will not be growing a tail, but I am sure you will grow to love and understand the bunny butt! Technically they are supposed to ( according to the standard) be docked close enough that there is no nub but not indented either. I dont have exact wording, but no one is going to hold me to that right? LOL!

My vet told me that Zia's tail wasn't docked short enough, so she, too, has a little nub that wags a lot! It is so cute when it wags.

Mine are tail-less as well! They just have tiny, tiny nubs that I can see moving if I'm looking right at it. But they wag their whole bunny butts at me.

I would say Checkers has about a one inch nub... very close, but still just barely enough that I can occasionally catch a small wag. What I find neat between my two now is that Checkers almost always has his tail low... so it really looks as if it is blending into his body. Gator, however, not only has a longer nub... but he carries it high... like you would expect from a spitz type of breed. I can't help but imagine if he had a full tail he would carry it curled above his back. I'll see if I can get a picture later to show the difference between the two.

Yes, all of mine are that way. The standard says "docked as short as possible without being indented". If a Pembroke puppy is docked right they won't have a tail.

No, it won't grow.

It's funny Bonnie - I was going to start a thread on how I have seen so many of the Pems on here with little nubbins for tails.

The breed standard according to the Canadian Pembroke Association for tails is: "as short as possible".

My two have nothin', not even a nub - I'm used to it and I get the salsa dance of love - butt wigglin' - for extreme happiness and other minor variations depending on the level of joy.

I can also tell by their expressions when they are happy - your other dogs have tails, so you just may be more used to seeing them.

Neither of mine have tails or nubs. Montrose would shake her back end so fast, and the hair would move at such a rate we would say that there was a humingbird under her skirt!

Dylan, he sometimes wags his back end, but most of the time I am looking at that great big beautiful grin that he has.

I have seen wiggy nubs though and I think they are great!

And no, they don't grow one later on.

Dale does have the sweetest smile when he is happy. He is now going through the typical 9 week old spoiled stage. He growls and Chip lays on him and squeezes his nose until he stops. Too funny. I flop him over on his back until he stops his little tantrum. He is a real good puppy. He has taken over Chip's birthday bed I bought him and hoards all of the new toys in the bed with him. Anyway back to the thread - he does have enough stub so every once in awhile he will waggle it just a bit but I do love Chip's little nubbin.

I must say that if one is going to the trouble to dock a tail then a decent job of it should take place, otherwise why bother.
