I need help with housetraining!

I am happy to say that Oliver is the most perfect puppy on the planet (in my unbiased opinion, of course LOL!) He truly is the sweetest, gentlest dog I could ever hope for. And smart - he can sit/stay, down, come, leave it, etc. He adores people, loves all other dogs, and will play endlessly with the cats. I just can't believe how much I love him!

HOWEVER, he keeps peeing on the carpet! I take him out regularly, look for his signals, etc. I thought this was normal but he is almost 5 months old and should definitely be better by now. I got him when he was 10 1/2 weeks old. I know part of the problem is he's had to go on paper while I'm at work.

I would love to hear how y'all housetrained your puppies. Thanks!

With all those attributes, I think I'd just keep some sponges handy! He's an ol' Southern boy and you know how they are. Sorry-I know I'm no help but, just had to say that. I'm sure someone with a bit more intelligence than I have today will be able to help.

It took Lola a while to get housebroken. I think a large part of the problem was that she could smell where she went to previously and that was just too tempting. Those smells are really hard to get out too because no matter what cleaners we tried it didn't seem to work. We were going to try professional carpet cleaners next, but then we moved to the new house and she stopped just like that.

There are several sprays on the market that elliminate the odor of where your puppy has peed. I used it all the while I was training Chip and he hasn't peed in the house in several months. I am now using it with Dale. Chip was a good six months old when I could declare he was completely housebroken and my husband was home with him most of the time so just keep working at it and it will happen. Good luck.

Bonnie ~ what kinds of sprays did you like the best? I've tried a few but Zip still pees in two areas of my house.

I like the urine out or urine gone- I think that is what it is called. I bought it at Petsmart for Chip but I have used it all so I can't tell you the name. I bought a bottle of that Nature's Miracle orange oxy power for Dale and that seems to work well too. Although I think the urine out is better. I need to get some more so when I go to Petsmart again I will let you know for sure of the name. I sop it up and spray like crazy.

I have used two products that have worked well- on both cat and dog pee-- one is called Zero Odor which you have to get online... www.zeroodorpet.com and the second one I have found both on line and at select pet supply stores- it is called Get serious! neither product have strong smell to them and they work.

My two house trained pretty easy with very few accidents. Tuck and Lu are my 1st 2 dogs so no expert....

1)I went by the text book information that what goes in has to come out. So within 20-45 minutes after eating, drinking a lot (I keep water down all the time) I made sure they went outside and waited for them to potty. After they wake up from a nap, after vigerous play - they also will need to potty.

That being said, I leave mine for 8-9 hours while I go to work, so enter tip #2.

2) Confine them to a small area. Many people will advise you to crate. It's great advice but not right for me. I love X Pens (can be bought at any pet supply store). So mine were given their crate w/ an extended play yard. Theory is dogs won't soil their "space". So limitimg the area they have, don't allow them full access to your house. Use baby gates, small rooms like laundry rooms or bathrooms. Allow them to keep you company/play in other parts when you can watch them carefully.

3) That's how I managed to catch them in the act! Very effective. WHen I caught both in the act I screamed "Nooooooo", picked them up mid pee/poo, and ran them outside, put them down on the grass, and said "go potty". If they did, embarassed myself telling them how truly wonderful they were!

4) To this day, I say "good pee, good poo" every single time they go anywhere in the great outdoors. People probably think I am nuts when they hear me falling all over non-puppies for going potty. I once read that praise is always good.

5) X pen or gate any particular area you don't want them in. I have a formal living room and no one goes in there. It has a light carpet calling out nto be peed on!

I did something similar as well, I kept Lord in the bathroom until he was housebroken and then I kept them both there because Lord regressed a bit at 1.4 years old because of Lola being there and his need to reclaim his house back.
I also praise them a lot all the time when do their business outside, I say: "Good girl outside!" & "Good boy outside!". Once in a while they will get a treat randomly, wouldn't want them not doing their business on purpose if there is no treat.

This sounds like some good advice, its my first week with our puppy and its about 50/50 so far with potty inside or outside. How old are you corgis now, I dont see to many around here.
