Mrs Grace, I like the name Drostan! Seems like I heard somewhere that dogs respond better to names that have S's or T's in them. Sorry, I can't remember where I heard that.
My daughter named our guy Gromit after the clay-mation character from "Wallace and Gromit." They are a British pair who love cheese and have crazy misadventures. I think choosing a Welsh name is a very cool idea - wish I'd thought of it! Good luck deciding!!!

Mrs Grace- if you need help with any Welsh name let me know- how about Taliesin- (pronounced TAL-EE-ES-IN) a Welsh poet from the 6th century and could be called Tal for short.
Of your choice of names- Ifan would be the correct spelling and if the names ending in ll are Welsh origin they would have the Welsh LL sound. say L but suck in as you say it.

I love the ideas of Gaelic names or Welsh names. But lets not share too many Celtic name choices, as my husband and I have decided on some boys names for when/if we have a son that we'd like to keep top secret..so don't dig too much farther, hahahahaha! With a last name like Bennett, we need to spice it up so a bit so we aren't the generic family(which saying that just made me think of that cartoon Bobby's World, they were called the Gen-er-ick family and everyone called them Generic...wow, a huge ramble and no one probably knows what I am talking about!)
I like Conall and Rory...The meanings are always important. Although, Ponzo may be the only Italian welsh corgi(as my family likes to point out) his name is slang for "chubby belly" in Italian, which of course he does have. His name has significance because he was named after my family's business's first Hauling Truck which was named by my grandfather after my father's nickname as a child. The truck's name was The Little Ponzo...Little Ponzo being my dad's nickname! I also mentioned that I could name a cute corgi pup, Little Ponzo while standing over my dying grandfather's bedside...He had been completely out of it, but opened his eyes and laughed at my comment, thus sealing the name because it was really the last conversation I ever shared with him. So, you never know when a good name will come around...and my vet even agrees, he checked the data base and there isn't a single Ponzo that goes there except mine!! |

Make is something easy to say or other people will mangle it all the time.

You might see if the breeder has a name chosen already, it might be one you like. Peggy

Dale was named prior to him being born and the breeder started calling him Dale as soon as I picked him out and he knew his name when I brought him home. So much easier.

Then I try to pick call names to go with the registered names. I have two reasons for naming my puppies myself, 1) is that I want to call them something while they're here, so they need names. 2) is that years ago a female I had placed was returned to me at 18 mos. old. The new owner never sent her papers in and we had a heck of a time getting the AKC to register her late (they have a provision for that now, but didn't then.) So to avoid that I just name and register all my puppies myself now. Peggy

In namng your new pup, anything goes I would say. Whatever a breeder names a pup is only temporary until new ownership takes over then the new owner can either keep the same name or give the dog a completely different one. Even with older dogs who have been given a name for years, if a new owner doesn't like the name for whatever reason, change it by all means. A lot of dogs answer to several names anyway. Two of my Corgis I retained the name the breeders gave them - the rest I named myself. There is one rule of a sort in naming a dog - don't cal him or her a name that can be confused with a common instruction.
