my corgi is 12 years old and I got her as an 8 year old rescue. She's a tri and has dark black running down her spine with more of a sable black on the sides, so the "stripe" could be normal. My condolences on losing your first pet and best of luck with the pup.

Thanks so much for your condolenses
My Corgi is a red and white. By the stripe down his back, I meant that it is the same fur color, but different texture(like adult hair) and it seems like the rest of him is still that puppy hair and I was wondering when it would all be the same - at what age. Corgimom linda |

I am wondering too about different Corgi hair and texture... Emma has always had very full double coat. She is fawn color looks like the corgis I see on the dog shows. Chloe is still a puppy but I don't feel any undercoat yet though her fur is getting thicker. Her mother didn't seem to have a very full coat - I thought it may have been pregnancy and nursing 5 puppies. The mother is also a tri. I found out later the mother was a little younger than I first thought.
My question is do tri-color corgi have a sleaker coat or is it just because Chloe is still young or could there another reason?

The less soft strip of hair (corse hair) could remain on your Corgi permanently - a bit like a Ridgeback feature. Some Corgis have longer hair areas straight down from their heads and around the very top portion of their backs _ Taylor has this.

Chip is 12 weeks old and he also has that strip down his back with a small amount of black mixed in. He has a black tip on his tail. He is sable and white. I noticed today that he is starting to shed on his hind legs so I am thinking it may be his baby fur coming out but I am not sure. He has a heavy undercoat in that area. Anyway, he got a good brushing

Taylor is three and he has a slightly corser strip of hair running part of the way down the centre of his back - and it will be there permanently I suspect.
It's quite a normal thing. |

The more you comb and brush a Corgis coat, the more lush and softer the coat will be including any corse hair area. That's another good reason for daily grooming.
