May 9th I got the sad news the red brindle unfortunately has a congenital defect, hydrocephulus, the most severe with the head already swelling. He won't live beyond 2 years if it wasn't severe. Heart breaking because his personality was a dream.

Thankfully, we are not the ones missing out of a puppy and it will be big boy, feisty girl (last week's nickname from the breeder was trouble), and pretty boy. Big boy has been my husband's favorite, but we'd be happy with any of them.

Sad to hear about the red brindle puppy. Nice to hear that you will not loose out. Keep us posted. Can't wait to hear which one you get and to see pictures.

Merrie - sorry about the Corgi pup you set your sights on and sorry for the pup too that will never have the joys of being mothered by you.
I'd go for the pretty Corgi over the biggie and the fiesty. Pretty boy Corgis turn heads - so he will always be extra popular with people at large and most Corgis thrive on this.

IMO, you don't need "pretty" to attract attention. If you are getting a corgi so you can attract attention you are getting a puppy for the wrong reasons.

In my experience corgis of all colors and markings attract enough attention. People are drawn to them anyway. Corgis get enough attention without needing to be "pretty".

Merrie, I advise you to go with the temperment/personality that you can live with. Listen to the breeder, she will be able to guide you towards the puppy that's the best fit for your family.

Also, for those wondering, in the US anyway, most of us who breed (meaning reputable breeders) do not allow prospective owners to come in and pick whatever puppy they like from the entire litter. I either choose which puppy I feel will fit into their home or guide them to choose from a couple puppies. And that's after I've made my choice as to what I'm keeping or running on.

It could be the "pretty boy" will not be available for a new home.

Peggy, you are jumping to conclusions. Merrie said nothing aboit the temperament of either the big Corgi pup or the pretty Corgi pup - so one presumes that they are both temperamentally fine.

Michael you are jumping to conclusions. I didn't say anything about the temperment of these puppies. I said she should go with the temperment she could live with. Meaning that the temperment is more important than looks or "pretty".

By "the temperment she could live with" I am talking from my experince with puppies. Each will have his/her own temperment/personality, they will be individuals and not the same. So she should go by the temperment or personality that will fit into their household.

Michael:

You can have five babies born at the same time with the same parents and still have five different personalities. You should know that from being a parent. Personality and temperament are very important when picking out a puppy and you need to get one that will fit with the family. Each puppy is different even though they are born in the same litter. Also remember pretty is as pretty does.

I believe in different personalities of course, but along with each different and separate personality, a Corgi can be temperamentally acceptable.

When matched with families who have compatible lifestyles, expectations, experience and personalities.

Big boy is ours - 07-05-2007, 11:38 AM

For Michael's benefit, I'll explain our choice of puppy. We chose, with the breeders help in explaining each puppy's personality, a puppy that would fit our personalities. What is interesting is that our puppy did not show all the personality traits until it was away from the pack. Specifically he is anxious or better said, thinks before acting. He shys away from new dogs but is fine the next time they meet. Why is this fitting for our family, because my son and husband are similar!

The trait we liked at the breeder is Chester - his name now - is a cuddler, very affectionate. When I sat on the floor at the breeder, he came running up to me to give me kisses. As much as I really loved a brindle, he wiggled and kissed his way into our home. My husband always liked him.

So we won't be the center of attention walking down the street, but I DON"T CARE! This is a small town anyway. Hollywood people come
