Coat changing colors? - 06-26-2007, 12:51 PM

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums and Corgi's. I got my Corgi approximately a week ago. She is 14 weeks and the runt of the litter. Her coat is very dark brown on her back and I was wondering if it will lighten up or stay dark? The breeder said it would change colors but I thought I would come to the "experts" for their advice.

Here is a picture of her, I can post more if needed...

Congrats on getting such a lovely Pem pup. She may be the smallest among her siblings but that does not make her a 'runt.' I love her markings - my type of white markings on a red Corgi. No doubt the redness will lighten up but it appears she will be always have quite a deep red coat - lucky you. Got a name for her yet? I take it she was the last of the litter left to sell. I like the way she stands - nice topline, sturdy stance, front legs well apart.

Thanks for the reply.

We think she seems like a Kate, so I guess we'll with that for name. She wasn't the last one left, there was a tri-color left that the breeder was going to holdback but I thought that Kate had more character. I had no clue her coat was considered red, I can't wait to see how it turns out.

I prefer red and white to tri in Pems. A Corgi is not termed the colour brown. They are degrees of red and can be coloured fawn ( the very very light coloured red). There is a fairly rare Pem colour combination of black and tan (no other colours present). The tan in this case is another version of a reddish brown. Your Kate is 'well bred' then?

Shippo looked like this before I got him:

Now he's about a year and a half old, and looks like this:

It was a pleasant surprise for me, because I really wanted a red and white. >^_^<

Yeah, I suppose so.

Cheetah: Shippo turned out awesome! I can only hope my Kate turns out half as nice as that.

It is really good to compare the young pup with the grown adult and Cheetah has turned out much like you would expect from the times he was 2-3 months old including his eventual coat colour. He seems barely a fluff judging by that more recent photo. He has good length of neck and a nice straight back with no need to adjust the natural positioning of his back legs. Did you have to coax him to get his ears so erect and his head so straight?

I only baited him like you would bait a show dog. He knows the "stand" command, paired with "stay." He was looking at me in that pic, and the camera was off to the side. >^_^<

I can't wait to start training mine. I would now but I found out at Vet the other day that she had colitis, which is nothing too serious just irritated bowels. I have to force medicine into her mouth after feedings and she's giving me the cold shoulder because of it.

Aw that sucks. Is it liquid meds? Shippo recently got over a nasty case of chryptosporidium, and they gave me pills, and a few cans of prescription food, and I used the wet food to trick him into taking the pills by making little balls of it and shoving the pill inside. >^^;<

Yep, it's liquid unfortunately. I have 12 more doses to go until we're all done with them.

I do not consider the smallest puppy in a litter a runt. After all human babies are not all the same size, why do we (people in general) think puppies should be? If the puppy is healthy and thriving it is not a runt.

Chances are her color will lighten. Probably more like her head color.
