Rocko's Ears.. - 08-14-2007, 05:43 PM

So, it's been a while since I've posted. I am starting to have some concerns with Rocko's ears. He is not 14 weeks (as of yesterday) and his ears aren't standing yet. When he lays down on his side or back, they stand straight up like they should, and most times right when he gets up they stay for a few seconds then fall. I don't know if it's time to tape them for support or if I should wait a bit longer. If I should tape, how do I do that? Not that I mind having him with floppy ears, but I REALLY want them to stand!! What a bad momma I am..

Another thing.. I had mentioned before his weight, and some had said he was a little small for his age. He went to the vet 3 days before his 14 week birthday and weighed in at 11.5 pounds. I know he should be well into 14 pounds by now, but he's not thin or anything. He eats like a little piggy and I give him plenty of food. I'm not too awful worried as I may just end up with a smaller corgi.

Yes, if they're not standing on their own now you should tape them.

What I do is roll the ear into a little devil's horn and wrap white adhesive tape around the base of the ear. Each ear individually.

Here's another method: http://www.phi-vestavia.com/EARTAPING.htm

Yup, sounds like he's just going to be on the small side. If he's healthy and not thin then don't worry about him.

For a very easy to follow method of taping a Corgi's ears (plus illustration) go to: www.phi-vestavia.com/EARTAPING

14-16 weeks is about the time to tape if a Corgi's ears are not properly erect.

If you have a Corgi who doesn't fit the medium (ie small, large), don't go by weight, go by sight and feeling (easily feeling the ribs). Don't 'spoon' in the food just because you have some notion your Corgi should be a certain weight. Overweight as per the size of a Corgi, is a killer.

I don't "spoon" in the food to get him to a standard size. I was just saying he eats plenty of food, as in he doesn't skip meals and always eats the amount I give him. He is perfectly healthy and I can feel his ribs. I'm guessing he's just going to be on the smaller size.

That's what I got from your post.

I think you're right, he's just going to be on the small side. And that's ok too, IMO.

Peggy - thank you.

Wnen I said "spoon' it was in reference to a perception that a Corgi was been fed upwards to reach a certain weight.

Ugh, ears! Come to my house for awhile. Let's see the collies need to have them taped over and the corgis taped up. I have stock in duct tape! Yes that's right, duct tape! I use goo gone to remove it.

Cardigan ears can take forever to get firm and stand up. Right now I am taping the Canadian boys ears. Just waiting to see what the 6 pack does in a few weeks.

I actually don't roll the ear. With the cardi's I run a piece around the base of the ear, then a small piece on the inside portion to slightly cup the ear. I need to get pictures up on that. Connie Whan taught me that trick and it really works!

Good luck--oh and Connie also suggested adding unflavored geletin to that diet. Not sure if it really works or not but we did it with Wally and Moose, and it did seem to help, I think.

We taped Molsen's ears when he was a pup ... I wish I had the website ... Poor Molsen, I think we tortured him.

Molsen was always a porky puppy and Miller on the other hand was a tiny puppy. They are both about the same size now. Molsen is just thicker (not fatter) and Miller is lanky. Just like kids!
