puppy/adult coat - 09-12-2007, 02:49 PM

Hi everyone

I wanted to ask for your experiences with the adult coat growing in. Peanut is currently 12 weeks old and has a strip along his entire back (about 1 in thick) of adult fur . It’smore coarse and long than the rest of the puppy coat.. I was wondering if I need to groom the adult fur differently. Any special conditioner? Will all his puppy fur eventually change? If so, how long?

Thanks
-sarah

I always brush the hair Sophie's hair backwards, but she sheds like mad no matter what. If you took all the hair off my bed you could probably make a fur coat.

Peanut's hair strip is quite normal. Doesn't need any particular attention and it will disappear in time as the entire coat of your Corgi moves into his junior stage of life.

behindereyes-Have you ever considered a good grooming outside for about 30 minutes? That does wonders for keeping hair off the couch and bed. I groomed Bubba this evening for that time and got a bag full using a Zoom Groom, slicker brush and comb.

BTW-Hows Lucy, your cocker spaniel doing? She still staying outside or did you decide to bring her in now and then? How does she take to Sophie or are they rivals of a sort? Hard to take care of two dog if you're in college-I wouldn't be trying it.

Here's a better deal than the 30 minute chore: three minutes daily grooming - comb/brush/comb.

Three minutes wouldn't even get me started good. I use the Zoom Groom first as it gets so much dead hair off, followed by the slicker brush and then comb. I do that about every other day with a little less time each day but, it would take me a lot longer than three minutes. Being from the south, we move a little slower!

It take me three minutes to groom Taylor but only two minutes for Alice. Taylor is long coated. I do groom with quite a heavy hand - it is not only quicker and more effective, but Taylor prefers it that way because he enjoys the massaging, scratching and skin tingling effects.

I just noticed yesterday, the 2-3" strip of "adult" fur down Charlie's back. Seemed to happen overnight. It's not longer than his puppy fluff, but definitely thicker, shinier and a bit courser.

I ordered some Buddy shampoo and rinse after all the recommendations on this board. So far, he hasn't needed a full bath. Just rinsing his paws off after some digging in the flowers.

He hated to be brushed when I first got him. Everday while he's napping on my lap I grab a slicker brush and run through his fur for 2-5 minutes. He's sometimes annoyed, and sometimes seems to actually enjoy it. He's been really great with clipping his nails, cutting the fur between his toes, ear cleaning, and brushing his teeth!

Looks like Charlie’s right on Peanut’s tail! I didn’t notice Peanut’s adult fur until we washed him one day and I noticed an area of rough, coarse fur. Initially I thought it was residue from the puppy shampoo, but my boyfriend said it was the adult fur.
How is the Buddy shampoo? We are starting to give Peanut weekly baths because everyday he plays outside in the grass and eliminated outside.

After reading the reviews on the forum and from the breeder, I purchased the FURminator. Wow, that thing is amazing. Its like a tick/flea comb x 5! Peanut is hasn’t warmed up to brushing, but will stay somewhat still when we brush him.

Good to hear Charlie is doing well!

Charlie is reacting very well to all your 'pampering.' He'll soon be picking up the brush or comb for you to groom him

Hi Sarah and Peanut,

Charlie's "back and forth" on liking being brushed. One day he fights and tries to eat the brush, the next day he acts like "Oh that feels good. Keep on!", then back to fighting the next day. I usually brush him on "eat-the-brush days" until he settles down and at least tolerates it.

The Buddy Wash smells great! It's funny, the bottle reads something like "not tested on animals, but perfectly safe for humans. You're dog won't mind sharing". That actually made me think about using it on my hair because it smells so good. I'm afraid though that friends will ask what I'm using. When I say "dog shampoo", there will be no doubt that I'm a weirdo!

I'm only planning to shampoo Charlie at most once a month because the vet said that while the topical flea treatment is "supposed to be waterproof", it isn't if you're scrubbing with shampoo. He did say clean water rinse should be ok.

I've been adding the Furminator to my eBay watch list, but the medium size keeps selling for $30 or more. The pet supply store 2 miles from my house has them on sale for $30. I haven't bought one yet because I have a shedding brush, combs, and a slicker from previous pets. If I could get a really good deal on a Furminator, I'll get one. The fur on Charlie's rear-end is the only place that seems to get a little tangled. Hopefully that's just puppy fluff and will be easier to comb/brush when he has adult fur "back there".
